“Slugger” Valbuena leads Clippers to win; homers twice, drives in seven

When you see Columbus Clippers infielder Luis Valbuena, he is not a home run hitter by any stretch of the imagination. He is a small, speedy contact hitter. But he gets himself into trouble at the plate by trying to hit homers and being impatient at the plate.

So on Monday night in Buffalo, it was odd to see him turn into a “slugger”.

Valbuena hit two home runs and had seven RBI’s in leading the Clippers to their seventh consecutive victory of 8-2 over the Buffalo Bisons. The homers extended the Clippers’ home run streak to a season-high eight games.

Valbuena hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the seventh. He also walked with the bases loaded in the first inning, the fourth walk by Bisons starting pitcher Dylan Owen (2-3).

The winning pitcher was David Huff (5-2), who in seven innings allowed four hits and struck out 10 and no walks, in winning his second straight start.

Chad Huffman extended his hitting streak to seven games with an eighth-inning double.
