Ohio State splits doubleheader at Penn State

The Ohio State baseball Buckeyes split a doubleheader with Penn State, winning game one 5-1 and losing the second game 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. By splitting, OSU has a record of 16-17 while the Nittany Lions move to 23-13. Both teams are 6-5 and in a second-place tie in the Big 10 Conference.

Drew Rucinski, who is starting to become the ace of the staff, threw seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four to improve his season record to 4-1.

In the nightcap, the Buckeyes jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first off Penn State starter John Walter.

But the Nittany Lions came back with three runs on five singles against Buckeyes’ starter Brett McKinney in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. Penn State added two more in the second, on a pair of walks, two stolen bases and an RBI single by Jordan Steranka to up the lead to 5-1 after two innings.

Heath Johnson came on in the ninth inning to close out the game for the Nittany Lions, earning his first save of the season.
