It was a wild Sunday at Augusta National Golf Course in Eastern Georgia. It was wild in the sense of as many as eight players held at least a share of the lead during the final nine holes of the 75th Masters.

The winner turned out to be the son of a former golfer who was playing in the event for only the second time.

The champion of the Masters for 2011 is Charl Schwartzel, who is 26 years, a South African and unknown to most golf fans. But he is known to the media and his peers. The 5’11, 140 pound soft-spoken golfer was among the top 30 in all 2010 major tournaments. His best finish was a tie for 14th in the British Open.

Schwartzel closed the tournament with four birdies to win by two strokes. He made putts from 10, 15, 12 and 18 feet to become the first player in Masters history to close at 4-2-3-3. Overall, he ended at 14-under-par 274 for the tourney after shooting a 6-under-par 66 on Sunday. He bested two Australians, Jason Day (68) and Adam Scott (67).

Tiger Woods closed with a 67 and finished for the four-day tournament at 278 in a tie for fourth with Geoff Ogilvy (67).
