The fans in Lubbock, Texas, home the of Texas Tech University Red Raiders will find themselves rooting for a former rival coach who used to lead their arch-rivals, Texas A&M Aggies.

The Red Raiders fans have welcomed Billy Gillespie to lead their basketball team back to the top of the Big 12 Conference. He has a five-year contract.

Gillespie, who is 51, is a native of Abilene, has a record of 140-85 in seven seasons as  Division I coach, led UTEP and Texas A&M to quick turnrounds from losers to contending winners in their respective conferences.

In 2004, Gillespie led UTEP to its first NCAA tournament bid since 1992.

Under Gillespie’s guidance, the Aggies of Texas A&M had three straight 20-win seasons. In 2005, he was voted the Big 12 coach of the year.

Gillespie followed the popular Tubby Smith at Kentucky and never was liked by the fans. He was fired in 2009 after the Wildcats missed playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 17 years.
