If college basketball fans did not know who Melvin Johnson III and the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners were before Wednesday’s NCAA First Four game, they know now.

Johnson came out of so-called shooting slump to poor in a career-high 29 points, leading UTSA to a 70-61 win over Alabama State at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

The Roadrunners (20-13) now head to Cleveland, Ohio for a Friday date against top-seeded Ohio State.

Against the Hornets of Alabama State (17-18), Johnson had so many open shots it seemed like he was playing by himself in his backyard. In the first half, he outscored the Hornets all by himself, 25-21.

Alabama State, from the Southwestern Conference, had the worst record in the expanded 68-team tournament.

The Roadrunners had never won an NCAA tournament game up until Wednesday. Now they can put that talk to rest.

The Hornets, champions of their conference tournament, reached the NCAA Big Dance without having a winning record all season long.

Jeff Middlebrooks and Tramayne Moorer scored 12 points apiece.
