Ohio State senior center Jantel Lavender was named the Big Ten co-Player of the Year by a panel of media, becoming the first women’s basketball player in conference history to earn the award four times.

Lavender is also the only women’s basketball player among the Big Ten, ACC, Big East, Big 12, Pac-10 or SEC to accomplish the feat. She shares player of the year honors with Michigan State’s Kalisha Keane, who was voted top player by the conference coaches.

Lavender became the first Big Ten freshman to win Player of the Year honors (media) in 2008 when she shared the award with Wisconsin’s Jolene Anderson (coaches choice). She has won the award outright the previous two seasons.

Lavender, a unanimous first team all-Big Ten selection by the coaches and media, led the Big Ten in scoring 22.6 ppg, rebounding 10.7 rpg, and field goal percentage .532 this season en route to her fourth player of the year award. She also ranked in the top 10 in free throw percentage at 80.6 percent (125 of 155) and was fifth in the league with 51 blocked shots. She picked up six conference player of the week honors this season, pushing her career total to 18, the most in Big Ten history. The native of Cleveland, Ohio, became the Big Ten’s all-time rebounding leader this season, racking up 1,352 boards in her career. She also became Ohio State’s all-time scorer with 2,677 points and just the second player in conference history to accumulate 2,600 points.
