Dayton wins road game at Charlotte, 69-51

CHARLOTTE – Chris Johnson tallied 14 points and five rebounds, Juwan Staten
scored 13 and Luke Fabrizius added 12 as the University of Dayton Flyers picked
up a 69-51 victory against the Charlotte 49ers.

The Flyers improved to 18-9 overall and got back to the .500 mark in the
Atlantic 10 at 6-6.

It’s the largest margin of victory on the road for UD since an 89-53 victory at
George Washington on Feb. 21, 2002. The win at Charlotte is also the first time
the Flyers have won at Halton Arena in four attempts.

Dayton shot 50 percent from the floor and hit 12-of-15 free throw attempts.
Staten went 5-from-8 from the field, Johnson hit three shots from beyond the arc

and all four of Fabrizius’ field goals were three-pointers.

The Flyers led 34-20 after the first half of play thanks to nine points apiece from Staten and Fabrizius. With Chris Wright in foul trouble early on, UD spread the ball around and had nine players score in the first 20 minutes of play.   That distribution of the ball continued in the second half as well as Dayton went 12-of-23 from the floor.   UD’s defense was just as impressive as the offense forcing 15 Charlotte turnovers and holding the 49ers to 35 percent from the floor.   Dayton dominated the glass out-rebounding Charlotte 37-23.   Other contributors for Dayton included Devin Searcy adding seven points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench, Paul Williams tallying five points and four assists and Wright extending his blocked-shot streak to 15 games.   The Flyers return home to begin a three-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 19 as UD hosts the Duquesne Dukes at noon.
