The University of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team knew it would be tough to beat the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Petersen Events Center.

When the Bearcats found out they had to play Pittsburgh without their best player Yancy Gates, the task got even more difficult.

Gates is the Bearcats’ leading rebounder and second leading scorer and was serving a one-game suspension for violating an unspecified team rule.

It probably would not make a difference in the game, as the Panthers overwhelmed UC 71-59 in the Big East matchup.

Cincinnati (18-5, 5-5) has lost five of its past eight games after beginning the season 15-0.

#4 Pittsburgh (21-2, 9-1) has won 52 of its past 54 games at home and holds onto first place in the Big East race with a two-game lead.

Ashton Gibbs led the Panthers with 25 points, 18 in the first half.

Larry Davis scored 13 points to led UC.

The Bearcats out-rebounded Pitt, which leads the nation in rebounding margin at plus-13.2. UC pulled down 23 offensive rebounds, the most allowed by Pittsburgh in 10 years. of those 23 rebounds, Cincinnati scored just 15 second-chance points.
