BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Marion-Franklin beats Walnut Ridge

Fred Lipscomb contributed to this story

There is no question that when it comes to the Columbus City League South Division, defending champion Walnut Ridge and Marion-Franklin are the most athletic, with experience, height and deep benches.

Tuesday night, the two powerhouses,  got to together at the Red Devils gym and the host team used its size and athleticism to a 70-65 win over the Scots. A 12-0 run in the fourth helped them take control of the game.

The Red Devils 6’8 center Elijah Macon took control of the game by scoring 29 points and 12 rebounds. Macon is one of the top juniors in the State of Ohio.

Macon is a high percentage shooter, 75 percent in his past four games.

The win pushed the Red Devils to 7-4 overall, 5-2 in the City South Division and a game behind first-place Walnut Ridge, who has a record of 8-3, 6-1.

Marion-Franklin is playing under a new coach in Lebanon Spann IV, because 14-year head coach Orlando McCoy resigned last week for personal reasons.

Spann used a 1-3-1 defense against the Scots using the big men in the middle to keep the Scots away from the basket.

Austin Traylor, who’ll be going to Wisconsin on a football scholarship, scored 20 points, all in the second half to lead Walnut Ridge.
