Buckeyes end season with 31-26 thriller over Arkansas; loss streak to SEC in bowls ends

The Buckeyes enter the off-season on a high note for the second year in a row.

They finally knocked the monkey off their backs by beating Southeastern Conference member, Arkansas 31-26 in the Big Easy of New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl. It ended a 33-year drought.

The Buckeyes move to 12-1 to end the season while Arkansas falls to 10-3.

The Razorbacks came back from a 28-7 deficit to 31-26. They blocked an Ohio State punt. with 1:08 left, Arkansas was set up to serve OSU another SEC loss, but they had to drive down the field without any timeouts.

But two plays later, with 58 seconds left, defensive end Solomon Thomas, one of the five players facing a 2011 suspension and the only backup player involved, intercepted a Ryan Mallett pass.

There was a crowd of 73,879 at the Louisiana Superdome. The game lasted 3 hours, 41 minutes.

All of the suspended players of NCAA violations played well.

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES GAME NOTES

QB Terrelle Pryor was 14 of 25 passing for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Pryor was equally as good on rushing the ball 15 attempts for 115 yards with a 7.7 yards per rush.

OL Mike Adams played well on the offensive line.

TB Daniel Herron rushed 24 times for 87 yards and 3.6 a carry.

WR Devier Posey caught 3 passes for 70 yards and 1 touchdown.

DL Solomon ThomasĀ  had a rare interception of a Ryan Mallett pass with 58 seconds remaining to stop the winning touchdown drive. He dropped back into pass coverage and intercepted the ball at the Ohio State 10-yard line.

Stars of the game would be Cameron Heyward who played with an injured elbow. Terrelle Pryor set a career record for rushing by an OSU quarterback and tied the school record for career touchdown passes.

Ohio State played in its sixth consecutive BCS game and has the most BCS bowl appearances, with nine. The Buckeyes are 6-3 in those games.

The Buckeyes bowl record stands at 20-22 overall. Under Jim Tressel, they are 6-4.

With 115 yards rushing, Terrelle Pryor surpassed Cornelius Greene (2,066) as OSU’s all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks. Pryor now has 2,164 yards.

The Buckeyes said goodbye to 24 seniors after the game. The 2010 senior class won 44 games, which tied the 2009 class for most wins in school history.

Terrelle Pryor also tied Bobby Hoying’s career record for touchdown passes with 57.

The Buckeyes allowed only 94 yards per game rushing.

The Buckeyes allowed seven touchdowns through the air in 12 games and interecepted 18.

ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS GAME NOTES

QB Ryan Mallett completed 24 of 47 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns.

Arkansas is 0-4 against Big Ten teams in bowl games.

Arkansas is now 12-22-3 in bowl games overall.

The Razorbacks had the 16th-best pass defense in the nation, allowing 182.3 yards per game.

Safety Tramain Thomas leads the defense with 71 tackles and four intereceptions.

QB Ryan Mallett had 30 touchdowns and 11 intereceptions.
