Voracek comes back from 2-game benching to lead Blue Jackets to OT win

Jakub Voracek had been a healthy scratch the previous two hockey games. In the world of hockey, a healthy scratch means a benching by the coach for various reasons: not playing defense, not checking, not playing with intensity, not scoring goals. In other words, its a chance to clear a players mind and get re-energized and get motivated again.

Whatever the case, Voracek made a nice return to the lineup .

He basically rescued Columbus from a complete collapse after dominating the game from the start. He scored the overtime goal in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in Nationwide Arena.

A crowd of 17,652 fans saw the Jackets in a familiar scene, blowing a 3-0 lead before being led to the win by Steve Mason and Vorcek in overtime.

Mason made several stops especially on Alex Kovalev and Peter Regin as the Senators kept charging the net in the third period and overtime. They outshot the Blue Jackets 38-23, including 16 to 7 after the second period.

But Voracek did not want to disappoint the huge New Year’s Eve crowd. He pounced on the puck after a Kovalev turnover behind the Ottawa goal and stuffed home the game-winner between the pads of goaltender Brian Elliott at 2:06 of overtime. The win gave the Blue Jackets three wins in a row, all with Mason back in the net.

Columbus built up a 3-0 lead on goals from R.J. Umberger, Sammy Pahlsson and Rick Nash.

The Blue Jackets are now 2-6 on Friday and 2-5 wearing their new third jerseys.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME

Jake Voracek, Columbus Right Wing, had an assist and the game-winning goal

Mike Fisher, Ottawa Senators Center, scored a goal, had six hits and four shots

Steve Mason, Columbus Goaltender, made 35 saves, including two huge saves in overtime. Is a hot goalie once again.
