* In 1908, Jack Johnson became the first African-American boxer to win the world heavyweight championship.

* In 1941, Winston Churchill became the first British prime minister to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.

* In 1960, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Green Bay Packers, 17-13, for the NFL championship.

* In 2004, 230,000 people were killed by a tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean.

* In 2006, former President Gerald R. Ford died in Rancho Mirage, California, at age 93.

* In 2000, Actor Jason Robards died in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at age 78.

* In 2005, Monday Night Football ended a 36-year run on ABC-TV with a 31-21 win by the New England Patriots over the New York Jets. Disney, Inc, switched the game to ABC’s sister station, ESPN.
