Brigham Young dominated an overmatched UTEP team 52-24 in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque.

Freshman Jake Heaps threw four touchdown passes, three to Cody Hoffman, and finished the game with 264 yards passing.

Hoffman had eight catches for 137 yards, Joshua Quezada ran for 101 yards on the ground for the Cougars who end the season at 7-6.

In 2011, BYU will be an independent and play the type of schedule they want just like Notre Dame.

Texas-El Paso drops to 6-7.

BRIGHAM YOUNG GAME NOTES

* The Cougars broke a streak by playing in the New Mexico Bowl. The previous five years, BYU had played in the Las Vegas Bowl.

* Came into the game winning five of their last seven games to finish 6-6, losing only to nationally ranked teams Utah and TCU.

* BYU’s run defense improved significantly after head coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the defensive play-calling duties following the October 1 loss at Utah State.

* QB Jake Heaps had a promising November, with nine touchdowns and one interception in four games. As a true freshman he showed better composure and decision-making that the other veteran quarterbacks on the team.

TEXAS-EL PASO GAME NOTES

* The Miners came into the game having lost five of their last six games.

* UTEP started the season at 5-1.

* Injuries took a heavy toll on the senior-heavy roster.

* QB Trevor Vittatoe was solid in the first half of the season (14 TD’s, 2 interceptions), but an ankle injury hampered his effectiveness. He wasn’t 100 percent for the bowl game.

* WR Kris Adams had 11 receiving touchdowns ranked fourth in Conference USA, and averaged an unheard of 20.8 yards a catch.

* WR Marlon McClure ranked fifth nationally with an average 29.8 yards on kick returns. McClure returned two kicks back for touchdowns, including a 100-yard effort against Arkansas.
