Sullinger drops in 40 points against IUPUI

We all knew before coming to Ohio State, Jared Sullinger was a great basketball player.

So when he scored 40 points against IUPUI recently, that was not shocking at all.

But those points came in a week when his uncle, Harold Sullinger, a former basketball player at Iowa, passed away.

The 6’9, 270-pound Sullinger, a freshman, set an Ohio State record for freshman with 40 points, including 26 in the second half, leading a rally by the Buckeyes to get past Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis in Value City Arena.

This was the first 40-point game by an Ohio State player  since Dennis Hopson had 41 in a loss at Dayton in 1986. Sullinger also grabbed 13 rebounds and set a couple more freshman records by sinking 16 of 23 free throws.

The 40 points by Sullinger might’ve been all-for-not if OSU had lost. The Buckeyes were losing 50-41 with 12:30 to go in the second half. Sullinger scored 14 points in a 24-4 run which turned a possible upset into win number seven for the 7-0 OSU squad.

The Buckeyes have not lost a home game to an opponent outside of the six major conferences (Big Ten, Big East, Pac 10, ACC, SEC and WAC) since losing at St. John Arena to Bowling Green.
