Dayton slips past Savannah State, 61-59

In the world of NCAA Division I basketball, fans may not know much about Savannah State. For years they were a powerhouse in Division II and III but recently moved up to play with the big teams.

12,153 fans in the UD Arena had to hold their collective breaths as the Flyers barely escaped with a 61-59 win over the school from Savannah, Georgia in the Global Sports Main Event. The win was the second in the four-game tournament for Dayton.

Savannah State, now 1-5, were led by senior Jovonni Shuler who scored 17 first half points to lead the Tigers to a 37-34 halftime advantage. Shuler was held scoreless in the second half as Dayton’s defensive effort held Savannah State to 32 percent shooting. Sophomore Preston Blackmon also finished with a game-high 17 points for the Tigers.

Dayton junior guard Paul Williams led the way with a season-high 15 points as the Flyers notched it’s 39th consecutive non-conference win at home.

Dayton, now 4-0, finished 24-of-37 from the free throw line to the Tigers 13-of-15. But down the stretch in the second half, UD converted on 10 of its last 12 trips to the foul line to ensure a two-point win.
