Media reports everywhere this Monday morning says that the Washington Redskins are going to change their controversial nickname very quickly. Probably as quick as this week.

The Redskins owner, Dan Snyder, who bought the team in 1999 from Jack Kent Cooke, has said all along he would not change the name which has been around since 1933, when then-owner George Preston Marshall created it.

Over the years, there has severe and increased scrutiny from society as racist and demeaning towards Native Americans. But the pressure has been ramped up in the past month due to the death of George Floyd which has reignited nationwide protests over racial tensions and inequality in the United States.

Another turn of events happened on July 2 when FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo and other businesses joined each other to cut business agreeements and ties with the Redskins unless the franchise changed its nickname. Then some sponsors showed their muscles. FedEx requested a name change and Nike pulled all Washington gear from its online store.

After those moves, the ownership said they would look into changing the nickname which the NFL has praised.
