SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have acquired infielder Jorge Mateo from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

Mateo, 25, spent the entire 2019 season with Triple-A Las Vegas for the second consecutive year and posted career highs in batting average (.289), SLG (.504), OPS (.834), hits (154), home runs (19), RBI (78) and runs scored (95). His 24 stolen bases marked his fifth consecutive season with 20-or-more steals, and he led the minors in triples (14) for the second straight year. The 6-0, 182-pound right-handed hitter earned MiLB.com Organization All-Star honors for Oakland last season, was named to the Pacific Coast League Mid-Season All-Star team and was a Futures Game Selection.

The Santo Domingo Oeste, Dominican Republic native has made 552 career appearances at shortstop, 66 at second base and 29 in center field. Mateo was originally signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2012 and was traded to the Oakland A’s as part of the Sonny Gray deal at the 2017 trade deadline. He is a .267 (751-for-2818) career hitter with 131 doubles, 76 triples, 52 home runs, 302 RBI and 283 stolen bases. He led minor league baseball in stolen bases (82) in 2015 and has led his league in stolen bases three times (2013, ’15 & ’16).
