COLUMBUS, Ohio – Amari McMahon, a running back who spent three seasons with the Ohio State football program, has been awarded the Corwin A. Fergus Award by the Department of Athletics as he prepares to enroll in Ohio State’s College of Dentistry this fall.

Fergus scholars are male or female student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics (3.00 GPA minimum), demonstrated positive qualities of character and citizenship and shown potential for success in a graduate or professional program. Also honored with the Fergus Award were Selina Vickery of the women’s soccer team and Quinn Fike of the women’s swimming team.

Established in 1967, the award is given in memory of Corwin A. Fergus, a member of the Ohio State football team (1912-14), a graduate of the Ohio State School of Law and later a successful businessman. The award reflects his strong commitment to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence and his positive contributions to society. The $5,000 postgraduate scholarships, which are renewable for up to three years, can be utilized for graduate study or professional programs at Ohio State.

A Dublin, Ohio native, McMahon joined the Buckeyes in 2017 and recently graduated with his degree in biology. A three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, McMahon was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in the 2018-19 academic year for having a grade-point average of 3.7 or better.

On the field, McMahon was part of three Big Ten championships teams as the Buckeyes had a combined record of 38-4 since the start of 2017. The Buckeye teams that he played on won the 2017 Cotton Bowl, 2019 Rose Bowl, earned three pairs of gold pants and appeared in last season’s College Football Playoffs.
