Eric Mialky, a local school teacher and traveling soccer coach, is the first to be named a “Columbus Champion”

For Immediate Release: April 20, 2020

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC today announced a special “Columbus Champions” initiative to recognize and tell the stories of local individuals who have gone above and beyond to make a positive impact on the Columbus community. During these challenging times, “Columbus Champions” will be digitally announced bi-weekly and will have their story featured on the Club’s website, in addition to receiving a token of appreciation from the Club.

Supporters are encouraged to nominate someone who goes above and beyond to make a positive impact on the Columbus community as a “Columbus Champion.” Individuals can submit details via the following link:

“We are excited to announce our ‘Columbus Champions’ initiative as perhaps now more than ever it is important that we take the time to recognize the good work that is being done by members of our community,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “We are grateful to those that make an impact here in Central Ohio and we look forward to highlighting and sharing their stories. We know there are countless individuals out there making a difference and hope that supporters will be inspired to nominate those most deserving of recognition.”

Eric Mialky, a fourth-grade math and science teacher at Toll Gate Elementary School in Pickerington, Ohio, is Crew SC’s first “Columbus Champion.” In his spare time, Mialky, 46, serves as a traveling soccer coach and organizes soccer camps. A Crew SC supporter and Season Ticket Member since 2002, Mialky regularly coordinates the children who accompany the players entering the field before the match begins. More information about Mialky and why he was chosen as a “Columbus Champion” is available with a full interview at

As part of MLS Unites, Major League Soccer’s platform that aims to bring the soccer community together during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Crew’s website currently features digital programming which includes a Crew Home Workout led by Kelly Roderick, Crew SC’s Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach; The Breakdown, which features TV analyst Jordan Angeli providing analysis on specific plays from Crew matches; weekly food recipes from registered team dietitian Jay Short; and a weekly Kids’ Corner activity book for the children at home, which is downloadable and printable. In addition to this, Crew SC supporters can also catch “Inside The Crew” – the Club’s weekly radio show – on 97.1 The Fan every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. ET.
