#1 Seeded UD Flyers to take on #9 Richmond in A-10 Women’s Tournament today

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women’s basketball team opens the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals Friday at 11 a.m. against No. 9 seed Richmond at UD Arena.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters the tournament as the top seed and earned a first round bye. The Flyers finished the regular season with a 22-8 record overall and a 15-1 A-10 mark. UD is 11-2 at home this year and on a two-game winning streak.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018.

As a team, the Flyers are scoring 64.5 points each outing and holding opposing teams to 57.5 points. Dayton is shooting 38.4 percent overall, 32.6 percent from three, and 71.1 percent from the free throw line. UD has a +3.5 rebounding margin and +1.8 turnover margin.

Dayton is led by senior Jayla Scaife with 13.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, and is coming off a week in which she averaged 21 points and 11 boards. Redshirt junior Erin Whalen is contributing 12.5 points as well while hitting 58 threes this season.

SCOUTING RICHMOND
Richmond comes to Dayton as the No. 9 seed in the tournament with a 15-16 record on the season after going 7-9 in league play this year. The Spiders are 8-8 in away games this season.

Head coach Aaron Roussell is in his first season at Richmond, but boasts over 300 wins in 16 years of coaching.

This season, Richmond is averaging 61.0 points per game and giving up 62.8 points to opponents. The Spiders are shooting 39.2 percent from the field, 32.0 percent from behind the arc, and 68.5 percent from the charity stripe. Richmond faces negative rebounding and turnover margins as well.

Leading the Spiders is Jaide Hinds-Clarke with 11.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Claire Holt is chipping in 11.0 points while Kate Klimkiewicz is adding 10.0 points each game.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton finished the regular season with a 78-66 win on the road at Saint Louis Saturday to finish with a 15-1 conference mark. Jayla Scaife had a season-high 27 points to go with nine boards.

Richmond advanced to the A-10 Quarterfinals after upsetting No. 8 seed George Washington Tuesday on the road, 57-49. Kate Klimkiewicz powerd the Spiders with 15 points, going 6-of-9 from the field.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Richmond have met 26 times previously with the Flyers winning 16 times, including the last 13 contests. Earlier this season, the Flyers went to Richmond and earned a 65-61 victory over the Spiders. Three players scored in double digits for Dayton.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers rank 26th in the nation in scoring defense and 42nd in field goal percentage defense. Individually, Shakeela Fowler ranks 31st in the country in free throw percentage.

FLYERS CLINCH A-10 TITLE
With the win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Feb. 26, Dayton clinched the 2020 Atlantic 10 regular season title outright. The Flyers also earned the No. 1 seed in this year’s A-10 Championship.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT
In Coach Green’s four year tenure at UD, the Flyers are 28-2 in the month of January including perfect marks in 2016-17, 2017-18, and this season as well.

FLYERS BY 40
Dayton defeated La Salle on Jan. 4, 2020 in the A-10 opener 98-58, the first 40-point win for the Flyers since defeating La Salle on Feb. 22, 2015, 91-49, at home. Dayton scored 94+ points in two of three straight games.

CHALLENGED EARLY AND OFTEN
Dayton created one of the hardest non-conference schedules in program history, taking on three nationally ranked teams in the first seven games, and facing numerous 2019 NCAA Tournament participants. The Flyers have already played No. 6 South Carolina, No. 4 UConn, No. 21 Gonzaga, three-peat MAC Champions Central Michigan, and former NCAA participants Northeastern, Auburn, and Maine.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 114 of its last 140 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.812), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

WE’VE GOT AN AUDIENCE
On Dec. 5, 2019, the Flyers played in front of 10,554 fans at UD Arena while hosting Morehead State. The record-breaking crowd was due to the overwhelming success of UD’s annual School Day game, a chance for local school-aged children to take a field trip with the Flyers. It was the fourth largest crowd for a NCAA women’s game this year and biggest in program history. With a home attendance average of 3,019, Dayton ranks 45th currently out of 351 Division I programs and leads the A-10.

COACH GREEN EARNS 100th CAREER WIN
Dayton head coach Shauna Green earned her 100th career win with a 59-55 victory over George Mason on Jan. 8, 2020 at UD Arena. With a previous coaching stint at Loras College, Green has amassed over 70 wins at UD alone.

The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.
