Lamar swingman T.J. Atwood named February 24 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar guard/forward T.J. Atwood is the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

He averaged 21 points per game on 54.5 percent shooting and grabbed five rebounds a contest in the Cardinals’ two wins last week. Atwood dropped 20 points and shot 8-of-12 from the field on Wednesday in a 77-65 win over Sam Houston State, Lamar’s first win in Huntsville since the 2011-12 season.

With the Cardinals leading the Bearkats by just one at the half, Atwood connected on four of his five attempts from the field and totaled 11 points in the second half as Lamar outscored SHSU 41-30 in the final 20 minutes. He grabbed five boards, dished out a pair of assists and recorded a steal in the victory.

The Islanders sent Atwood to the free-throw line 10 times in the second half of Saturday’s contest, and he sank all but one try to power the Cardinals to their third-straight win. Three of Atwood’s five rebounds came on the offensive side, and he tallied a trio of assists.

This marks the first career Player of the Week award for Atwood and the third for Lamar, joining Avery Sullivan (Nov. 26) and Davion Buster (Feb. 3). The Cardinals are the only team with three different winners in 2019-20.

Honorable Mention: Rylan Bergersen, Central Arkansas; Trenton Massner, Northwestern State; Payten Ricks, Abilene Christian.
