Sinclair Men’s Basketball wins record-setting 102-100 in double overtime over Hocking College

Dayton, OH – The Sinclair (14-11) Men’s Basketball Team traveled to Hocking College for a conference match Wednesday February 12. The Pride won a highly competitive contest that took going into 2 OTs to pull out the win 102-100. After going five years without an OT game for the Sinclair program, they were faced with back-to-back overtime meetings and sneaked out the win on both occasions.

The Pride struggled on the defensive end early in the game, giving up offensive rebounds on the first 5 possessions and allowing the Hawks to stay close. After the initial struggles of adjusting to the environment and the hostile crowd that Hocking provided, Sinclair slowly came into their own. The Pride were able to play aggressive defense and force the Hawks into low percentage shots. Continuously pounding the paint was working wonders for Sinclair as they were able to get easy layups or force the fouls.

Stanley Williams (6-07/FR – Eastmoor Academy, OH) had a tremendous half, posting 10 points on 5-6 shooting and 5 rebounds. Once the Pride started boxing out, they were able to take away the offensive rebounds, ultimately Hocking’s best offense. With a 38-30 lead at the break Sinclair still had a lot of things to fix. Shooting a dismal 4-11 from the free throw line and giving up a total of 11 offensive rebounds.

The Pride came out of the break and started firing errant and early shots, while falling for several pump fakes before seeing the 8-point halftime lead evaporate. Jack Hendricks (5-11/FR – Fairmont HS, OH) did a tremendous job playing in the passing lanes and getting consecutive steals. Sinclair took a page out of Hocking’s book and started crashing the offensive glass and saw themselves getting easy buckets.

The Pride found the game tied up 74-74 at the end of the 40 minutes. Sinclair was able to start the overtime period with three consecutive 3 point plays. But, even with near perfect execution, the game was knotted up 91-91 as the buzzer sounded. With both teams facing serious foul problems, Jack Hendricks was able to hit some timely 3s and help Sinclair to a 102-100 2OT win.

Nate Ward (6-04/FR – Gahanna Lincoln HS, OH) posted 34 points on 10-20 shooting before fouling out late in overtime after posting 34. David Brown (6-05/FR – Linden McKinley HS, OH) flirted with a triple-double having 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Stanley Williams ended with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Jack Hendricks shot 6-9 from behind the arc having 18 points. It took a true team effort to come away with the win.

The win gives Coach Jeff Price his 306th career win at Sinclair, breaking the school record for most wins in program history.
