Rhode Island invades #6 Dayton in battle for first place in Atlantic 10 Conference

RHODE ISLAND VS. DAYTON – SERIES NOTES

  • Tuesday will be the 37th meeting between Rhode Island and Dayton.
  • The Flyers hold a slight 19-17 edge in the series.
  • Rhode Island is 7-9 on the road against the Flyers, but the Rams have won three of their last four trips to Dayton.
  • Last March 1, Rhode Island won, 72-70, in overtime at UD Arena. Cyril Langevine had 26 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while Fatts Russell added 23 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in the win.
  • The victory avenged a Rhode Island loss to Dayton earlier in the season. The Flyers beat the Rams 77-48 at the Ryan Center on Feb. 9.
  • The game features the best 3-point shooting team in the Atlantic 10 against the best 3-point defense in the conference. Dayton leads the A-10 and ranks 31st in the country with a team 3-point shooting percentage of .371. Rhode Island is limiting opponents to .282 from 3-point range, which is the lowest in the league and ranks seventh in the country.
  • The Flyers share the ball very well, ranking second in the country with 18.4 assists per game.
  • Dayton redshirt sophomore Obi Toppin and Rhode Island freshman Jacob Toppin are brothers.
  • Dayton is 13-0 at the UD Arena this season.
  • Rhode Island is 5-0 in conference road games this year.

CBSSN BRINGING THE GAME TO NATIONAL AUDIENCE

  • CBSSN will broadcast Tuesday’s game, marking the seventh appearance for Rhody on the network this season.
  • Tom McCarthy will handle play-by-play and Bob Wenzel will be the color analyst.
  • This is the third in a stretch of five straight games on CBSSN for the Rams.

10-GAME WINNING STREAK AMONG THE LONGEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY

  • Rhode Island’s 10-game winning streak is tied for the seventh-longest active streak in the country, and it is the 11th time in program history URI has won 10 or more in a row.
  • The only schools with longer active win streaks in the country are San Diego State (24), Baylor (20), Gonzaga (17), Winthrop (14), New Mexico State (13) and Tuesday’s opponent, Dayton (12).
  • Over the last 55 seasons, the only longer streak for Rhode Island was a 16-game win streak in 2017-18.
  • The current streak is tied for the fifth-longest in school history.
  • Current Head Coach David Cox and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Frank Keaney are the only coaches to be part of multiple 10-game win streaks at Rhode Island. Cox was the Associate Head Coach for Dan Hurley‘s team that won 16 straight in 2017-18.
  • The longest win streak in school history was 22 games under Keaney. It began with the final nine games of 1937-38 and stretched 13 games into 1938-39
  • Keaney had five other streaks of 10 or more wins.
  • He won 15 straight in 1939-40; 13 in 1936-37; 12 in 1928-2 and again in 1941-42; and 10 in 1940-41.
  • Rhode Island also won 10 straight under Ernie Caverley in 1965-66; with Jack Kraft in 1977-78; and again with Tom Penders in 1987-88.
  • Each of the five times the Rams have had 10-game win streaks in the last 55 seasons, they have qualified for the NCAA Championship field.

SECOND TOP 25 OPPONENTS FOR RAMS THIS YEAR

  • Tuesday’s game will be the second of the season against a ranked opponent for Rhode Island this season.
  • The Rams fell at No. 7/8 Maryland, 73-55, on Nov. 9.
  • Rhode Island is 16-101 all-time against ranked opponents.
  • It’s last victory against a ranked opponents was a 75-74 win over No. 20 Seton Hall on Nov. 23, 2017.
  • The last time Rhode Island beat a ranked opponent in Atlantic 10 play was a 75-66 win at No. 22 Dayton on Feb. 27, 2016.
  • Dayton will be the highest ranked Atlantic 10 opponent for Rhode Island since it played No. 2 Saint Joseph’s at the Ryan Center on Feb. 28, 2004. The Hawks won that game, 57-55.
