7th-ranked Dayton Flyers hold off streaky Duquesne Dukes in thrilling Wednesday night action, 73-69


Jalen Crutcher Hits 1,000 Point Mark On First Shot Of The Game


PITTSBURGH – The No. 7 University of Dayton men’s basketball team remains undefeated on the road after holding on to claim a 73-69 victory at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The Flyers remain undefeated in Atlantic 10 Conference play this season. Dayton has now won 10 straight games.

Dayton improved to 8-0 in conference and 19-2 overall. Duquesne fell to 5-3 in conference and 15-5 overall.

The Flyers were led by Obi Toppin with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, 10 rebounds and two assists, giving him his sixth double-double of the season. Trey Landers also scored in double-digits during the game with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Jalen Crutcher finished the game with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, five rebounds and six assists. Crutcher scored the first basket of the game, giving him 1,000 career points. He now has 1,016 career points, landing him the #47 spot on the most career points scored for Dayton.







1st Half: Dayton 38, Duquesne 30
• Dayton started the game by making 7-of-8 from the field, taking a 15-11 lead; Jalen Crutcher scored the first points of the game, giving him 1,000 career points.
• The Dukes responded by going on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 17 with 9:54 left in the half.
• Rodney Chatman responded with a three from the corner, starting a Flyers 9-2 that forced a Duquesne timeout with 6:27 to play.
• At the 5:12 mark, Ryan Mikesell made a layup, giving the Flyers a 10-point lead in the game, their largest of the game.
• The Dukes then went on a 7-2 run that brought the score to 33-28.
• Crutcher hit a deep three off the glass to end the half, giving the Flyers an eight-point lead going into the half.
• Trey Landers led the Flyers in the half with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and two rebounds.
• The Flyers shot 16-of-25 (64%) from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1%) from beyond the arc while holding the Dukes to 36.7% overall.
• Duquesne narrowly outrebounded Dayton 15-14; Obi Toppin led the Flyers with four rebounds.
• Dayton dominated the paint scoring 22 points compared to just 14 points for Duquesne.
• The starters combined for 34-of-38 points for the Flyers in the first half.
• The Flyers assisted on 10-of-17 field goals; Crutcher and Toppin led the Flyers with two assists each.
• Dayton led for 18:03 of the half.

2nd Half: Dayton 73, Duquesne 69
• Dayton started the half with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 45-30; Crutcher hit a three that was followed by two dunks from Toppin, forcing a Duquesne timeout.
• Jalen Crutcher stayed hot after the timeout making another three to stop a 4-0 Dukes run before it got started.
• The Flyers then went on a 9-4 run which was highlighted by a Crutcher to Toppin alley-oop.
• The Dukes responded with a 13-2 run that included three three-pointers to cut the Flyers lead down to eight points.
• Duquesne went on a 9-5 run to cut Dayton’s lead to four points with only 6:10 left to play.
• Dayton responded with back-to-back buckets from Toppin followed by a three-point play from Landers to bring the Flyers’ lead back to 11 points.
• Duquesne then went on an 8-0 run to cut Dayton’s lead to 71-68 with 1:25 left to play in the game.
• With only 0:34 left to play, Duquesne hit a free throw to bring Dayton’s lead to two points.
• The Dukes fouled three times to get to the bonus, eventually sending Toppin to the line; he made both free throws, bringing Dayton’s lead to 73-69 with 0:16 left in the game.
• Toppin led the Flyers with 14 points and six rebounds during the half.
• Duquesne shot 55.2% from the field whereas Dayton shot 54.2% (13-of-24).
• The Dukes outrebounded the Flyers 15-11 in the half.

• Toppinfinished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
• The Flyers shot 29-of-49 (59.2%) from the field while holding the Dukes to 27-of-59 (45.8%)
• Crutcher had 18 points with five rebounds and six assists; Landers joined Crutcher and Toppin in double figures with 12 points.
• Seven different Flyers scored in the game.
• Dayton struggled on the glass, getting only five offensive rebounds compared to 15 for the Dukes.
• The Flyers were able to convert from the line, shooting 7-of-7 (100%) compared to just 7-of-13 (53%) for the Dukes.
• Dayton held the lead for 38:03 of the game, and never trailed in the contest.
• The Flyers are 19-2 for the first time since 2008-09, have won 10 games in a row for the first time since they won 13 in 2007-08, and are 8-0 in the A-10 for the first time since they were 9-0 in 2003-04.
