Carolina Hurricanes star Dougie Hamilton hurt in loss at Columbus

Dougie Hamilton is one of the Carolina Hurricanes top defensemen. He is a hulking figure on ice skates, standing 6’6″ and weighing 229 pounds. A very physical specimen.

He was having an All-Star year with 14 goals, 26 assists for 40 points in 47 games. Clearly, one of the MVP players for this season’s team.

However, in the game at Metropolitan Division rival Columbus on Thursday, the 26-year-old native of Toronto, suffered what looked to be a serious leg injury late in the second period.

Chasing down a puck along the near wall in the neutral zone, CBJ center Kevin Stenlund’s right leg got tangled up with Hamilton’s right skate. That resulted in an awkward spill for Hamilton, his left leg bending  under the weight of his body. The replays in the arena were horrifying. Hamilton, not putting any weight on his left leg, had to be helped off the ice and never returned to the game.

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said that Hamilton is listed as having a lower-body injury.

His teammates obviously were shaken by seeing one of their top leaders going off the ice injured. In a tight race for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, they will surely miss a player of Hamilton’s skills.

“Big loss. He’s played so well for us this season. It’s tough,” captain Jordan Staal said during postgame interviews. “We’ve got a great D corps, and a lot of guys can come in to try to fill that big hole. We’ll get him back as soon as we can.”

“Arguably one of our best players this year. He’s our All Star. It shook everybody up seeing that happen,” LW Jordan Martinook said after the game. “It’s the cliché hockey next-man-up type thing, but that’s a lot of big minutes to find. Guys will have to step up, and hopefully we can get him back sooner rather than later.”
