Raiders continue Horizon League unbeaten after 84-70 Friday night win at IUPUI; team is 15-3

Bill Wampler scored 26 points

Loudon Love added 20 points

The visiting Wright State men’s basketball team led virtually wire-to-wire on Friday night for an 84-70 win at IUPUI in what the Raiders hope is the first of two visits to the Indianapolis Farmers Coliseum this season.

The Raiders (15-3 overall) improved to 5-0 in Horizon League play with the win over IUPUI (5-13, 1-4 HL) and now head to Chicago for a Sunday afternoon matchup at UIC, who fell at home to Northern Kentucky on Friday night.

The Raiders improve to 6-0 in true road games overall this season and are one of five NCAA Division I teams with at least three road wins and zero road losses. Their six is the most among the remaining group of road unbeatens. The six true road wins to open the season are also the most by the Wright State program in its Division I history.

Friday night, Wright State jumped out to as much as a 26-point advantage in the first 20 minutes as half (eight) of its baskets came from beyond the three-point stripe. Tied at 11-11 early, the Raiders went on a 15-0 run over the next two minutes to gain control of the night.

Four Raiders finished the night in double figures scoring, led by Bill Wampler’s game-high 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting, including going a perfect 5-of-5 from deep. Loudon Love turned in the night’s lone double-double, tallying 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds as he recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds in the final 20 minutes alone.

Tanner Holden and Trey Calvin each finished with 10 points, with Holden tallying half his points at the free throw line and Calvin recording two of his four baskets from beyond the arc.

For the night, Wright State shot 29-of-29 (42 percent) from the floor and was 9-of-23 from three-point range (39 percent), with eight of those threes coming in the first half. The Raiders were 17-of-32 (53 percent) from the free throw stripe and finished the night with a 48-38 advantage on the glass, outrebounding IUPUI on both the offensive and defensive sides of the floor. The Raiders passed out 18 assists, led by Holden’s seven, and forced IUPUI into 12 turnovers that resulted in 14 points.

The host Jaguars shot 33 percent (19-of-57) from the floor and just 22 percent (5-of-23) from long range while converting 68 percent (27-of-40) of their free throw attempts.

IUPUI had three players finish in double figures, led by Jaylen Minnett’s 24 points, while Marcus Burk tallied 17 and Grant Weatherford finished with 12 points.
