Jackets dominate Penguins as Nyquist gets hat trick in 5-2 win

  • Tonight’s victory is the Blue Jackets’ fifth win at home in the last six games (5-1-0, 10 pts.).
  • Columbus has now picked up points in six of its last eight games overall (5-2-1, 11 pts.).
  • The Jackets improved to 7-3-1 in the last 11 home games against the Penguins.
  • This game was the second of four meetings between Columbus and Pittsburgh this season (CBJ 1-1-0).  The two teams will play in Pittsburgh on Dec. 12 and back in Columbus on Mar. 12.
  • Tonight was the second Metro matchup of a heavy divisional stretch where Columbus plays 10 of 15 games within the Metro division from Nov. 27-Dec. 27. The Blue Jackets are 3-3-1 vs. divisional opponents this season.
  • The Blue Jackets opened the scoring in a game for the 10th-straight contest (6-3-1).  That ties the franchise record for consecutive games scoring the contest’s first goal in CBJ history.  The Jackets notched the first goal of the game 10-straight from Dec. 19, 2013-Jan. 10, 2014 (6-4-0).
  • The Jackets scored three goals in a period for the third time this season.  The club also had three goals in the third period on Nov. 19 vs. Montreal and Nov. 21 vs. Detroit.
  • The Blue Jackets went 2-for-4 on the power play in the game.  It’s the third time in the last five games where Columbus has had multiple power play goals in a game (2-for-5 on Nov. 21 vs. DET and 3-for-5 on Nov. 23 at WPG).
  • CBJ are 7-for-18 (38.9 pct.) on the power play over the past five games.  The Blue Jackets are fifth in the NHL on the power play in November (12-for-44, 27.3 pct.).
  • Columbus went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill in the game. CBJ have killed off 18 of their last 19 penalties (94.7 pct.).  Since Nov. 2, the Blue Jackets rank second in the NHL on the penalty kill, killing off 31-of-34 (91.2 pct.).
  • This was the first time this season the Blue Jackets have received multi-goal games from multiple skaters in the same contest with LW Nick Foligno producing two goals and LW Gustav Nyquist providing a hat trick.  It happened four times last season (MR: Jenner (2) and Panarin (2) on Jan. 10, 2019 vs. NSH).
  • Columbus was outshot by Pittsburgh, 31-to-30.
  • Tonight’s attendance was a crowd of 17,402.



  • LW Gustav Nyquist scored the second hat trick of his career and the first for the Blue Jackets this season.  His first career hat trick was Feb. 2, 2014 vs. Washington as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. It was also his first multi-goal game as a Blue Jacket.  He now has 4-3-7 in his last six games and 7-3-10 vs. Pittsburgh in his last seven games.  He scored his first goal as a Columbus Blue Jacket at Pittsburgh on Oct. 5. His seven shots tonight led the team.
  • LW Nick Foligno provided two goals in the second period, also notching a goal on the man-advantage. The Blue Jackets’ captain has three goals in his last two games and 3-2-5 over his last six contests.
  • RW Oliver Bjorkstrand had the primary assist on Nyquist’s first goal, pushing his point streak to six games (2-7-9).  His current six-game point streak matches his career-high, set last season from Mar. 24-Apr. 2, 2019 (7-0-7).  He leads the club in points in November with 4-9-13.
  • C Pierre-Luc Dubois had the primary assist on Nyquist’s second goal and now has 4-3-7 in his last seven games.  He has seven assists in 10 career games vs. Pittsburgh.
  • D Zach Werenski also acquired an assist on the second Nyquist goal, giving him 3-7-10 in his last nine games.  The assist is the 100th of his NHL career.  He has a three-game point streak (1-2-3) vs. Pittsburgh, having scored a goal on Oct. 5 at Pittsburgh.  He led all Blue Jackets skaters with 22:43 TOI in the game.
  • G Joonas Korpisalo made 29 saves in the game, picking up his fifth win in his last six starts.  He earned the third star of the game for his efforts.
  • D Seth Jones had an assist on Foligno’s power play goal, giving him 2-3-5 in his last five games.
  • C Alexander Wennberg also notched an assist on the Blue Jackets’ fourth goal of the game, his third assist in his last five home games.
  • D David Savard had a team-high seven hits and picked up the assist on Nyquist’s empty net goal.
  • RW Josh Anderson scooped up an assist on Nyquist’s third goal of the game.  He had five shots, three hits and two blocked shots on 18:04 TOI.
