USWNT team squeaks by Sweden 3-2 at Mapfre Stadium

TV Broadcast crew

It was a cold night at Mapfre Stadium but the USWNT did everything they could to bring the heat on the pitch. Carli Lloyd scored two goal and Christen Press added one more in the first half to put the US Women’s National team up 3-0 heading into the half.
Sweden would not go down without a fight  in the second half as Anna Anvegard would score 2 goals 4 minutes apart to try to mount a comeback.
The USWNT would hold on to the lead, winning 3-2 and giving  Vlatko Andonovskil his first win as the new bench boss.
Press tallied her 50th USA Soccer career goal.
As was the case this summer’s World Cup when the USA needed only three minutes to score against Sweden in the teams’ final match of group play, the USWNT grabbed the early lead.
  • With the result, the USWNT is now 23-6-11 all-time vs. Sweden, which is currently ranked No. 5 in the world.
  • With the victory, Andonovski is the sixth of eight USWNT head coaches to win their first match in charge of the team.
  • Carli Lloyd, who captained the USA today scored her 14th and 15th goals of 2019 in her eighth start this year. She has scored the most goals on the team in 2019 and now has 120 in her career.
  • Lloyd’s two goals gave her the 21st multi-goal game of her career as she joined Heather O’Reilly as USWNT players to score under five different head coaches (of the nine total the team has ever had). Only Kristine Lilly scored for more USWNT coaches (six).
  • Christen Press’ assist on the opening goal was her team-leading 11th of 2019 and came in her 129th career cap. Her goal was the 50th of her career, making her the 11th WNT player to reach the 50-goal milestone.
  • At club level, Press played three-and-a-half professional seasons Sweden with Göteborg FC and Tyresö FF.
  • This was the first cap for Lynn Williams since the final game of the 2018 SheBelieves Cup against England on March
