American Athletic Conference Football News

American Pow6r Points:

·        American Athletic Conference teams continued their collective strong start to the 2019 season as league teams take a combined 14-8 record into Week 3.

·        The American is a combined 14-3 against teams that are not ranked in the national polls. Three of the eight overall losses have come to top-10 teams in true road games.

·        American teams’ FBS wins were by an average of 23.3 points yesterday. Perhaps most impressive was UCF’s 48-14 win at Florida Atlantic, where the Knights played in front of a school-record crowd in Boca Raton.

·        QB Dillon Gabriel threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns, while five UCF running backs found the end zone as the Knights improved to 26-1 in their last 27 games.

·        SMU is 2-0 for the second time in three seasons after the Mustangs took an impressive 49-27 win against North Texas behind three more rushing touchdowns from RB Xavier Jones, who has six TDs in two games. SMU will be looking for its first 3-0 start since 1984 with Saturday’s game against Texas State.

·        Tulsa scored a road win against San Jose State as the Golden Hurricane gained 539 yards in a 34-16 win. QB Zach Smith threw for 283 yards, while RB Shamari Brooks rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown.

·        Two head coached picked up their first wins at their respective schools as Mike Houston and ECU cruised past Gardner-Webb and Dana Holgorsen and Houston beat Prairie View A&M.

·        Memphis improved to 2-0 with a 55-24 victory against Southern at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The Tigers have won 17 consecutive nonconference regular-season games at their home stadium.

·        Two teams from The American fell to top-10 opponents as Tulane battled No. 10 Auburn in a 24-6 decision, while Cincinnati fell at No. 5 Ohio State.

·        UConn saw freshman QB Mike Zergiotis throw for 275 yards in his first career start, but the Huskies fell 31-23 to Illinois. USF held Georiga Tech to 257 total yards, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulls dropped a 14-10 decision in Atlanta.
