Ryan Day, the new Ohio State head football coach is starting his first season after taking over for the popular and successful Urban Meyer.

Much is expected yearly at the Columbus, Ohio school, one of the Big Ten’s benchmark schools. Anything less than at least a Big East title, Conference title, Bowl win or National Championship is deemed not good enough to media and fans.

Day proved he can coach during Meyer’s three-game suspension during 2018 in the Zach Smith debacle when the Buckeyes went 3-0 beating Oregon State 77-31, Rutgers 52-3 and a then tough TCU 40-28. Yes, people are saying the team would have won those games under Meyer too. But during that time, Day proved that he could deal with the media, lead the team, be organized and looked like he belonged as a head coach at least to this reporter.

But Day took over the program facing some tough questions. Who was going to replace record-setting QB Dwayne Haskins, who left early for the NFL. Who was going to coach the defense and get them back on track and who would be his assistant coaches.

He aswered all of those questions in record fashion. His first player move was to bring in QB Justin Fields, who transferred from Georgia. Put together a defensive staff that included two key coaches from Michigan, Greg Mattison and Al Washington. He then was able to add to the QB roster two more transfers, Chris Chugunov from West Virginia and Columbus area native, Gunnar Hoak from Kentucky. The quarterback room as Coach Day has been telling the media, is really unproven with very little experience but loaded with talent. We will see!
