Bowling Green Hot Rods beat Dragons 5-1 (August 15)

Bowling Green, Ky.—Bowling Green pitchers Miller Hogan and Michael Costanzo combined to scatter six hits without allowing a walk as the Hot Rods topped the Dayton Dragons 5-1 on Thursday night.  The two clubs have split the first two games of the three-game series that will conclude on Friday night in Bowling Green.

Bowling Green’s Ford Proctor got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the third inning.  Dayton’s Juan Martinez responded with a solo homer in the fourth, his seventh home run of the year, to make it 2-1.  But the Dragons were shutout over the rest of the night, collecting just one hit after the fifth inning.  Bowling Green took command with three runs in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Lyon Richardson (2-9) was charged with the loss.  He worked five innings and allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  Richardson left the game trailing 2-1.

Today’s Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Bowling Green Hot Rods (affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) in the second game of a three-game series.

Last Game:  Wednesday:  Dayton 4, Bowling Green 1 (12 innings).  In the longest game under the current rules format that began at the start of the 2018 season, the Dragons outlasted the Hot Rods in a game played in 4:11.  Dayton scored three unearned runs in the top of the 12th to break a 1-1 tie.  Both teams scored one run in the 11th inning to break a scoreless tie.  Bowling Green was 0 for 17 with men in scoring position (stranding 13) while the Dragons were 2 for 14.  Eddy Demurias became the first Dayton pitcher to bat since Nick Travieso in 2014 when he grounded into a fielder’s choice in the 12th after entering the game as a pinch runner in the 10th (Dragons had used every position player when Demurias came to bat as the DH in the 12th).

The Playoff Chase:  With 19 games to play, the Dragons face a six-game deficit in the race for a playoff spot.  South Bend is the wildcard leader.
