The 2018 edition of the Muskingum Fighting Muskies only finished seventh in the 10-team and tough Ohio Athletic Conference, but they made strides under first year head coach Erik leuter at 4-6-0, 3-6-0 in the OAC.

That might not look good to some football people and fans but the Fighting Muskies had been a program that is up and down for years. Alot of it had to do with being in a tough conference which is headed by the kingpin, Mount Union and other powerhouses like John Carroll, Baldwin Wallace and Marietta. Not to mention Heidelberg and Ohio Northern.

People surrounding the program said that Coach leuter came in and got rid of the bad attitudes, malcontents and players who weren’t willing to buy into his disciplinary ways and that turned the table.

leuter and his coaching staff injected some new energy and commitment into the hungry and thirsty program and it paid off with those four wins. Those wins were over teams that the Muskies ordinarily have trouble with in Otterbein and Heidelberg. They also beat Waynesburg and Wilmington in the process.

This year, the New Concord, Ohio school has a strong defensive unit intact with nine returning starters.

On defense, they have senior First-Team All-OAC defensive lineman Tim Ousley, Second Team All-OAC DB Cortez McGinnis, junior DB Brian Brown, senior LB Trocon Keneah, senior LB Caleb Gaiters, senior DL Yannis Dailey, junior DL Drew Lowery, junior DB Nehemiah Bowie and junior DL Chris Shakespeare.

McGinnis ended the season with 52 tackles, five pass breakups, and one interception. He had a career-high nine tackels in the Muskies season-opening win at Waynesburg, Pa.

McGinnis, a Health and Fitness Major from Cincinnati, Ohio Northwest High School, started all 10 games and is 6’3, 190 pounds.

The Fighting Muskies open the season at home against Waynesburg on Saturday, September 7.
