Down East catcher hits game-tying two-run homer in seventh inning

Cleveland, Ohio—Texas Rangers prospect Sam Huff has been selected as the recipient of the Larry Doby Award as the Most Valuable Player of the 2019 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which was played on Sunday evening at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Huff, who plays for Class High-A Down East in the Carolina League, hit a game-tying two-run homer for the American League off Colorado’s Ben Bowden in the bottom of the 7th and what would have been final inning. The game between the A.L. and N.L. ended in a 2-2 tie after one extra inning was played.

Huff, who is normally a catcher, entered the game as a reserve at first base and went 1-for-2 overall. He becomes the second player from the Texas organization to ever be named as the Futures Game MVP, joining the U.S. Team’s Joey Gallo at Minnesota’s Target Field in 2014.

Huff has combined to bat .284 with 21 homers and 56 RBI in 80 games between Low-A Hickory and Down East this season. He was promoted from Hickory to Down East on May 9. Huff was selected by Texas in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft and is in his fourth professional season.
