Wisconsin incoming freshman, Donovan and Lindmark selected in 2019 NHL Draft

Four Badgers selected at NHL draft for third time in four years

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Incoming freshmen forwards Ryder Donovan and Owen Lindmark were picked in the fourth and fifth rounds of the 2019 NHL Draft, respectively, on Saturday at Rogers Arena.

Donovan, from Duluth, Minnesota, became the first Badger drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights when he went 110th overall, in the fourth round.

Lindmark, a Naperville, Illinois, native, went to the Florida Panthers with the 137th overall pick in the fifth round. He joins current Badgers’ defenseman Tyler Inamoto with the Florida organization.

The 164th and 165th picks all-time for Wisconsin, the Badgers have had at least one player picked in 22 consecutive drafts dating back to 1998. A Badger has been picked in all but two drafts since the first Badger chosen, Jeff Rotsch, went in the 1970 draft.

On Friday, freshmen forward Alex Turcotte went No. 5 overall to the Los Angeles Kings, while forward Cole Caufield was chosen at No. 15 by the Montreal Canadiens. That gave the Badgers a pair of first-round picks for the third time in school history (2016, 2007).

Turcotte going at No. 5 made him the third-highest Badger drafted in school history behind No. 2 Dany Heatley in 2000 and No. 3 Kyle Turris in 2007.

The last time four Badger forwards were chosen in the draft was in 2004 when Jake Dowell, Robbie Earl, Matt Auffrey and Matthew Ford were picked.

Ryder Donovan, Duluth, Minnesota
The 6-3 and 184-pound center and Minnesota native led Duluth East High School in scoring with 17 goals and 47 points in 29 games during his high school season. Donovan helped his team advance to the Minnesota Boys State AA quarterfinals and was named to the All-State Second Team.

Owen Lindmark, Naperville, Illinois
The 6-0 and 192-pound center, and the third Badger from Team USA, finished his Under-18 season with 11 goals and 25 points in 56 games.
