Blue Jackets give Alexander Wennberg unconditional release to buyout contract

 

 

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed center Alexander Wennberg on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced last week. Wennberg has three years remaining on a six-year contract he signed with the club prior to the 2017-18 season.

“I wish Alex the best of luck and thank him for his contributions, both on and off the ice, to the Columbus Blue Jackets over the past seven years,” said Kekalainen.  “Decisions like this are never easy, but we believe it is in the best interest of our club at this time.”

Wennberg, 26, registered 40 goals and 161 assists for 201 points with 85 penalty minutes and a cumulative +5 plus/minus rating in 415 career games with the Blue Jackets, including 5-17-22, 16 PIM and -5 in 57 games during the 2019-20 season.  The club’s first pick, 14th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft added 4-4-8, 4 PIM and was +1 in 22 career outings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Blue Jackets continue roster upgrade with acquisition of RW Cliff Pu from Florida

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired right wing Cliff Pu from the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Markus Nutivaara, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

 

Pu, 22, has recorded two goals and eight assists for 10 points with 14 penalty minutes in 63 career American Hockey League games with the Springfield Thunderbirds and Charlotte Checkers and 3-8-11 in nine career ECHL outings with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and Florida Everblades since making his professional debut in 2018-19.  In 2019-20, he collected 0-2-2 and four penalty minutes in 10 contests with the AHL’s Thunderbirds and added 1-5-6 in four outings with the ECHL’s Swamp Rabbits.

 

The Richomond Hill, Ontario native was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round, 69th overall, at the 2016 NHL Draft.  He registered 80-130-210, 92 penalty minutes and a cumulative +53 plus/minus rating in 232 career Ontario Hockey League contests with the Kingston Frontenacs, London Knights and Oshawa Generals from 2014-18.  The 6-2, 185-pound winger tallied 29-55-84 and 28 penalty minutes in 65 games split between London and Kingston in his final junior campaign in 2017-18.  He helped London capture the OHL championship and Memorial Cup Tournament title in 2015-16 and earned OHL Third Team All-Star honors with the Knights in 2016-17 after notching 35-51-86 and 36 PIM with a +25 plus/minus rating in 63 contests.

 

Nutivaara, 26, has tallied 17-43-60, 30 penalty minutes and a cumulative +25 plus/minus rating in 244 career games since making his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets during the 2016-17 season.  Columbus’ seventh round pick, 189th overall, at the 2015 NHL Draft, he collected 3-6-9 and four penalty minutes in 37 appearances in 2019-20.  He has added 1-1-2 and five penalty minutes in 12 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS SIGN GOALTENDER TO TWO-YEAR, TWO-WAY NHL/AHL CONTRACT EXTENSION

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed restricted free agent goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks to a two-year, two-way National Hockey League/American Hockey League contract extension through the 2021-22 season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

 

Kivlenieks, 24, made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets in 2019-20, posting a 1-1-2 record with a 2.95 goals-against average and .898 save percentage in six games, which included four starts.  He turned aside 31 shots in a 2-1 victory at the New York Rangers on January 19 to become the second player in franchise history to win his NHL debut (Steve Mason).  The netminder helped the club collect a point in each of his first three NHL starts from January 19-February 13 (1-0-2).

 

A native of Riga, Latvia, Kivlenieks owns a 27-33-8 record with a 3.23 GAA, .892 SV% and three shutouts in 77 career AHL appearances with the Cleveland Monsters since making his professional debut in 2017-18.  He went 9-8-3 with a 2.96 GAA, .904 SV% and one shutout in 20 outings with Cleveland in 2019-20.

 

The 6-2, 178-pound netminder was originally signed to an entry level contract by Columbus on May 25, 2017.  He was named the United States Hockey League’s Player of the Year and Goaltender of the Year in 2016-17 after leading the league in wins, GAA, SV% and shutouts (tied) with a 36-7-6 record, 1.85 GAA, .932 SV% and five shutouts in 49 games with the Sioux City Musketeers.  He has represented Latvia at several international tournaments, including the 2016 IIHF D1A World Junior Championships and 2014 IIHF U18 D1A World Championships.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS ACQUIRE FIFTH ROUND PICK IN 2021 NHL DRAFT FROM NEW JERSEY DEVILS

 

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded defenseman Ryan Murray to the New Jersey Devils for the club’s fifth round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Blue Jackets General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced tonight.

 

Murray, 27, was selected by Columbus with the second overall pick at the 2012 NHL Draft.  In 347 career games with the Blue Jackets, he registered 15 goals and 95 assists for 110 points with 104 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +13 over seven seasons from 2013-20.  He added 1-2-3 and four PIM in 20 career Stanley Cup Playoffs appearances.

 

“Ryan is a very good player and quality person and we thank him for everything he has done as a member of our organization and wish him well in the future,” said Kekalainen.

 

A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Murray collected 2-7-9 and four PIM in 27 games during the 2019-20 regular season before adding 1-0-1 and two PIM in nine playoff contests.  His best season with the Blue Jackets was 2018-19 when had tallied a career-high 1-28-29, 10 PIM and was +20 in 56 games.

Blue Jackets sign defenseman Gavin Bayreuther

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Gavin Bayreuther to a one-year, two-way National Hockey League/American Hockey League contract for the 2020-21 season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced last Friday.

 

Bayreuther, 26, played in his lone NHL season with the Dallas Stars in 2018-19, collecting two goals and three assists for five points with 10 penalty minutes and a cumulative +2 plus/minus rating in 19 games.  He made his NHL debut on Nov. 16, 2018 vs. Boston and tallied his first career goal on November 23 vs. Ottawa (Craig Anderson).

 

A native of Canaan, New Hampshire, Bayreuther (pronounced BAY-Roo-Thuhr) has recorded 22-69-91 and 80 penalty minutes in 198 career AHL contests with the Texas Stars since making his professional debut at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.  In 2019-20, he finished third on Texas in assists and led club defensemen in goals and points (tied) and ranked second in assists with 6-23-29 and 28 penalty minutes in 59 appearances.  He set career highs with 7-25-32 in 71 appearances during his first full professional season in 2017-18.

 

The 6-1, 195-pound blueliner was signed by the Stars to an entry level contract on Mar. 15, 2017.  Prior to turning pro, he racked up 35-76-111 with 92 penalty minutes and was +24 in 142 career NCAA games at St. Lawrence University from 2013-17.  He was named to the NCAA Second All-American Team during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 campaigns.  He recorded 29 or more points in three of his seasons, including a career high 9-27-36 in 38 outings as a freshman in 2013-14, garnering ECAC Rookie of the Year accolades.
