EDMONTON (Sept. 9, 2020) – Bruce Cassidy of the Boston Bruins is the 2019-20 recipient of the Jack Adams Award as “the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success,” as selected by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.

Cassidy was named on 82 of the 132 ballots, including 37 first-place votes, for 288 voting points to top a competitive three-way race. Second-place Alain Vigneault of the Philadelphia Flyers received 32 first-place votes and 252 voting points, while third-place John Tortorella of the Columbus Blue Jackets was the top selection on 28 ballots in collecting 198 points.

Under Cassidy, the Bruins (44-14-12 in 70 GP) topped the NHL in both points (100) and points percentage (.714) to claim the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s best club during the regular season. Boston posted a League-best 44 wins, including 22 victories as both hosts (22-4-9) and visitors (22-10-3). The Bruins, who reached the 40-win milestone for the seventh consecutive season, also posted an NHL-best +53 goal differential while ranking in the top three in both power play (2nd; 25.2%) and penalty kill (3rd; 84.3%) efficiency.

A Jack Adams finalist for the second time in three years, Cassidy claimed the award for the first time after finishing second to Gerard Gallant (Vegas) in 2017-18. Cassidy is the fourth Bruins coach to capture Jack Adams honors, following Don Cherry (1975-76), Pat Burns (1997-98) and Claude Julien (2008-09).

BE THE CHANGE is the slogan for our racial equity initiative launched this summer. The Sun Belt believes one of the most effective ways to make progress is to educate people about the power of civic engagement. In partnership with our student-athletes, coaches and staff, we are facilitating conversations that better educate those in our membership about our electoral process, work to help register voters and create meaningful dialogue with law enforcement to build stronger community policing. We understand that it will be very difficult to assuage the hurt and pain felt by so many. As an NCAA Division I FBS conference with over 4,000 student-athletes, coaches and administrators from all backgrounds, we intend to lead by example. We are proud to be the first FBS conference to hire an African American Commissioner. We support the efforts underway to help America improve our democracy with equal justice for all. Together, we can build a better future for all of our citizens and communities.

DALLAS (FWAA) – The South Alabama Jaguars amassed 526 total yards and had two receivers top 100 yards in a 32-21 win at Southern Miss to snap a 15-game road losing streak and open the season with a win for the first time since 2016. The Thursday night victory earned the Jaguars the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Sept. 5, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.

All participating Division I FBS and FCS schools are eligible to be selected. This is the 19th season for the FWAA to award a National Team of the Week.

This is the first time South Alabama has been selected for this honor and it gives the Sun Belt Conference a team of the week honoree for a second consecutive year on the season’s opening weekend. Georgia State upset Tennessee in Knoxville to open the 2019 season.
