NHL Sanctions the Arizona Coyotes for Violation of League’s Combine Testing Policy

 

Club Will Forfeit Its 2nd-Round Pick in 2020 NHL Draft and 1st-Round Pick in 2021

 

NEW YORK (Aug. 26, 2020) — The National Hockey League has sanctioned the Arizona Coyotes for violating the NHL’s Combine Testing Policy during the 2019-20 season, directing the forfeiture of the Club’s 2nd-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and 1st-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

 

The sanctions were announced by Commissioner Gary Bettman, who convened a hearing on the matter August 6 that included testimony from representatives of the Coyotes and the NHL. At the outset of the hearing, the Club acknowledged that it had violated the Policy by conducting physical testing on 2020 draft-eligible players prior to the Combine.

 

In reaching his decision, Commissioner Bettman outlined key reasons for the Policy’s prohibition on physical testing prior to the Combine: to ensure competitive fairness among Clubs with respect to evaluating and drafting prospects and to avoid subjecting prospects to repeated and duplicative testing procedures.

 

The sanctions were imposed under Article 6.3 of the NHL Constitution, which authorizes the Commissioner to impose discipline “if he determines . . . that any person . . . has either violated the Constitution, the By-Laws, or any other governing rule or regulation of the League, or has been or is guilty of conduct . . . detrimental to the League or the game of hockey.”

 

Further, Article 6.3 empowers the Commissioner to deprive the offending Club of draft choices “if the conduct in question affects the competitive aspects of the game.”

 

“While the Combine Testing Policy Memoranda reference a fine of “no less than $250,000 for each violation” of the Policy, I exercise my discretion to impose the aforementioned discipline—which I consider to be more appropriate given the specific circumstances of this case,” said Commissioner Bettman.

 

“As for the Club personnel who participated in, or may have contributed to, the Club’s violation of the Policy, I have decided that no discipline shall be imposed on these individuals. While I conclude that certain Club personnel acted in a grossly negligent manner at best, which was conceded by the Club, I ultimately conclude that the record does not establish—to a standard with which I am comfortable—that those individuals engaged in intentional wrongdoing, as opposed to grossly negligent behavior.”

 

The NHL will not comment further on this matter.

NHL announces Start Time & Broadcast Details for Game 5 of Tampa Bay-Boston on Sunday, August 30

 

NEW YORK (Aug. 25, 2020) – The National Hockey League today announced the following update to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs Second Round schedule for Sunday, Aug. 30:

 

  • The start time of Game 5 between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins is 8 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on NBC in the U.S. In Canada, the game will be on Sportsnet, CBC and TVA Sports.

NHL fines Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella $25,000

 

NEW YORK (Aug. 25, 2020) – Columbus Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella has been fined $25,000 for his conduct during a media availability following Game 5 of the team’s First Round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, Aug. 19, the National Hockey League announced.

The fine is the collection of a conditional fine assessed Jan. 1, 2020.

 

The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.

Following a 142-day pause, the NHL dropped the puck with the Stanley Cup Qualifiers on Saturday, Aug. 1, followed by the start of the First Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The Qualifiers delivered nine days of thrills, including 15 come-from-behind wins, three of four teams seeded 11 or 12 advancing to the First Round, seven games with tying or go-ahead goals scored in the final 90 seconds of regulation, and three hat tricks, among other impressive feats.

 

That was followed by a First Round which saw 24 of 43 games (56%) decided by a single goal, including eight games that required overtime. Teams rallied from behind to win 17 times, including seven multi-goal comebacks. The Stars eliminated the Calgary Flames in Game 6 by scoring seven unanswered goals to overcome an early 3-0 deficit; rookie Denis Gurianov carried the Stars’ offense with four goals and five points, tying the NHL mark for most goals by a rookie in a postseason game. Series upsets saw each of the last two Stanley Cup champions (the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and the Washington Capitals in 2018) eliminated in the First Round. Meanwhile, the Lightning, which was upset by the Columbus Blue Jackets in a stunning First Round sweep in 2019, won the rematch in five games, including a five-overtime thriller in Game 1, the fourth-longest game in NHL history.

(NASDAQ: EA) announced today that EA SPORTS™ NHL®21 is coming to the PlayStation 4 And Xbox One on October 16 and unveiled a first look at Stanley Cup® winner Alex Ovechkin as the game’s cover athlete, for the second time. Ovechkin has been one of the most influential and impactful players in hockey and has become something of a muse for the development team, mapping the game’s innovation against the game-changing impact he has had on the sport. This year’s iteration also takes HUT, the game mode that allows players to create their fantasy lineup of NHL players, alumni, and icons, and compete with them online, to the next level with HUT RUSH.
