Dayton Women’s Basketball goes for A-10 title today against VCU

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Title Game And NCAA Automatic Bid Will Be On The Line Sunday

 

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women’s basketball team will play No. 2 seed VCU in the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championship title game Sunday at 12 p.m. on ESPNU at UD Arena.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton heads to its sixth A-10 title game having won two previously in 2012 and 2017. The Flyers have a 24-8 record overall this season and are 13-2 at home this year.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018.

As a team, the Flyers scoring 64.8 points per game and holding opponent sto 57.6 points. Dayton is shooting 38.4 percent overall, 33.5 percent from three, and 71.0 percent from the free throw line. UD also has a +3.8 rebounding margin and +1.6 turnover margin.

Dayton is led by senior Jayla Scaife with 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while redshirt junior Erin Whalen is adding 12.5 points and 4.9 boards each contest.

SCOUTING VCU
VCU comes in to the championship as the No. 2 seed after going 13-3 in the A-10 in the regular season. They have already defeated Davidson and Fordham in the tournament after earning a first-round bye. The Rams have won six in a row, but are 7-6 on the road this season.

Head coach Beth O’Boyle is in her sixth season at the helm of VCU and led the Rams to the title game last year as well.

This season, VCU is averaging 59.5 points each outing and giving up 56.8 points to opponents. The Rams are shooting 40.1 percent from the floor, 28.9 percent from behind the arc, and 71.1 percent from the charity stripe. VCU faces a -1.6 rebounding margin, but has a +1.9 turnover margin.

Leading the Rams is Tera Reed with 15.4 points per game and shoots 80.9 percent from the free throw line. Taya Robinson and Danielle Hammond are chipping in 11.4 points each as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton defeated No. 4 seed Saint Louis Saturday in the A-10 semifinals with a 58-50 victory at home. The Flyers were led by Jayla Scaife with 25 points.

VCU fought back from a double-digit deficit to defeat No. 3 seed Fordham Saturday in the second A-10 semifinal game, 60-55. Taya Robinson had a game-high 22 points and went 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

THE SERIES
Dayton and VCU have played 11 times previously with the Flyers earning eight victories, including the matchup earlier this season at UD Arena, 72-67.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers rank 40th in the nation in scoring defense and 48th in field goal percentage defense. Individually, Shakeela Fowler ranks 28th in the country in free throw percentage.

FLYERS CLINCH A-10 TITLE
With the win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Feb. 26, Dayton clinched the 2020 Atlantic 10 regular season title outright. The Flyers also earned the No. 1 seed in this year’s A-10 Championship.

COACH GREEN NAMED A-10 COACH OF THE YEAR
Dayton head coach Shauna Green was named A-10 Coach of the Year for the second time in four seasons this year after guiding her team to the regular season title and 15-1 A-10 mark.

FLYERS RECEIVE A-10 HONORS
The Flyers had a trio of student-athletes recognized with A-10 accolades with Jayla Scaife being named First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive team, Erin Whalen named Second Team All-Conference and All-Academic, and Araion Bradshaw named All-Defensive team.

UP NEXT
If victorious Sunday, the Flyers would receive an automatic bid in the NCAA Division I Tournament which will be announced on Selection Monday on March 16.
