PRESS RELEASE WRITTEN BY NFL COMMUNICATIONS; COURTESY NFLmedia.com

Fireballer Johnny Cueto named “20 Greatest Dragons”

Johnny Cueto pitching for the Dragons

Dayton, Ohio—The Dayton Dragons recently announced the next name on their list of “20 Greatest Dragons.” The player recognition is part of the organization’s 20th Season Celebration.  Players selected on the list of 20 are being announced in random order.

Next on the list of the 20 Greatest Dragons is:

Johnny Cueto

Cueto spent most of the 2006 season with the Dragons, with a team that amazingly featured three future Major League All-Stars (Cueto, Jay Bruce, and Travis Wood).  On May 13, 2006, Cueto threw the only complete game no-hitter in Dragons history, though the game was shortened by rain to five innings.  He earned the Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Year award for the year as he also spent time with Sarasota after a promotion.  With the Dragons, Cueto went 8-1 with a 2.59 ERA.  In 2013, he earned a win for the Dragons on an MLB injury rehab assignment, giving him a Dragons career record of 9-1, the best winning percentage (.900) of any pitcher in Dragons history with at least 10 decisions.

Cueto reached the Major Leagues with the Reds in 2008 and began a long, highly-successful, and still-active big league career.  He enjoyed two huge seasons with Cincinnati in 2012 and 2014 as he emerged as one of the top starting pitchers of his era.  In 2012, Cueto went 19-9 with a 2.79 ERA with the Reds, finishing fourth in the N.L. Cy Young Award voting.  Then in 2014, he became the Reds first 20-game winner in 26 years, going 20-9 with a 2.25 ERA to finish second in the Cy Young voting.  He also made his first appearance that summer in the Major League All-Star Game.

In 2015, Cueto was dealt at the trade deadline to the Kansas City Royals, where he helped his new team win the 2015 World Series.  Cueto is the only pitcher in Dragons history to start a World Series game, and his performance in that game was superb.  It came in game two of the ’15 series with Kansas City, when Cueto fired a complete game victory, allowing just two hits and one run against the Mets.  Cueto has started a total of eight post-season games including three with the Reds.

By any standard, Cueto ranks as one of the top starting pitchers developed by the Reds in the last 50 years, if not the very best.  Over the last half century, his 125 MLB wins ranks first among all pitchers to come through the Reds farm system, topping Tom Browning (123), Gary Nolan (110), Don Gullett (109), and Mario Soto (100).  Going back a little further, Joe Nuxhall, who made his historic debut in 1944 at age 15 before joining the Reds for good in 1952, won 135 games in the big leagues.  Jim Maloney, who made his debut with the Reds in 1960, won 134.

Cueto is the 13th player announced among the 20 Greatest Dragons.  Austin Kearns, Zack Cozart, Justin Turner, Homer Bailey, Samone Peters, Devin Mesoraco, Didi Gregorius, Tucker Barnhart, Todd Frazier, Wily Mo Peña, Jesse Winker, and Edwin Encarnacion were previously announced.

The 20 Greatest Dragons were selected based on a media vote of Dragons television, newspaper, radio, and internet reporters.  Additionally, during the 2019 season, the Dragons will be conducting a fan vote featuring one player per position to announce their all-time greatest lineup.

Additional information on the Dragons 20th Season celebration including videos on the 20 Greatest Dragons, special 20th Season merchandise, and Dragons alumni listings is available here:  https://www.milb.com/dayton/team/20.

CareSource, Dayton Dragons honored local veteran Gene Camp on July 3

DAYTON, Ohio – CareSource and the Dayton Dragons hosted United States Marine Corp veteran Gene Camp during the CareSource Veteran Salute Program on Wednesday, July 3, when the Dayton Dragons played the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field.

The CareSource Veteran Salute Program provides veterans in the Dayton region with a once-in-a-lifetime experience to celebrate their service to their country. Each honoree has their story shared in front of the crowd at Fifth Third Field, followed by a standing ovation in appreciation of the veteran’s hard work and dedication both in military and civilian accomplishments.

Gene’s Story

Gene Camp

“The sun will come out tomorrow” is a phrase Gene Camp lives by. Camp was born in Springfield, Ohio, and was raised in a children’s home for 11 years. By the time he was 16 years old, he had been in nine foster homes. He could feel himself going down the wrong path and decided to join the U.S. Marines in 1968 to make sure he stayed out of trouble. After going to Boot Camp in Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, Camp was deployed to Vietnam.

On March 26, 1970, Camp had 13 days left before he was scheduled to return to the United States. On his last patrol, it was quiet all day. In the middle of the Vietnamese rice paddies around dusk, everything changed. Out of nowhere, explosions erupted all around Camp and his company. Camp instinctively dropped to the ground but moved when he realized something was blocking him from gaining a field of fire. As soon as he started moving, something exploded right behind him. Camp saw a bright flash and heard an explosion that deadened his hearing. A medivac was called, and Camp was transported to a naval air station to recover from his physical injuries. It was only after the fact that Camp learned that it was a North Vietnamese Army battalion who had ambushed Camp’s company.

Following a lengthy recovery, Camp was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1973. After a few years, Camp went into the U.S. Navy from 1976-1987 where he was a Mess Specialist. Camp has over 25 years with the Federal Government between his time with the Marines, the Navy and a career with the United States Postal Service before retiring in 2006 on disability.

Today, Gene is active with the VFW and AMVETS. Gene is enjoying retirement and spends his free time golfing, fishing and enjoying life with his son, Tyler, and wife of 22 years.

CareSource’s Veteran Salute program highlights five veterans’ stories during the course of each season. Veterans who are chosen are honored at a Dragons game with an in-game ceremony and provided with VIP treatment during their special night. The program is an extension of CareSource’s continued commitment to serving special populations and its new efforts to support veterans through innovative health and life services programs. For more information about the Veteran Salute program, visit www.daytondragons.com/veteransalute.
