Finalists will perform the national anthem at Dragons games throughout the season, with the grand prize winner performing on Opening Day 2019 before the Dragons host the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field on Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m.

Dragons announce that Mascots, Green Team to perform at Dayton area Elementary Schools

PRESS RELEASE WRITTEN BY Tom Nichols; COURTESY DRAGONS MEDIA RELATIONS

Dayton, Ohio—Opening night for the 2019 baseball season is seven weeks away, but Dayton Dragons mascots Heater and Gem along with the Dragons Green Team are already bringing the excitement of baseball season to local elementary schools.  For the seventh straight year, the Dragons entertainment team is performing assemblies at Miami Valley elementary schools.  The program continues into April.

Each 30-minute interactive, fun, high-energy performance includes a visit by Heater or Gem and members of the Green Team, the Dragons signature group that facilitates skits, contests, and sing-a-longs during Dragons games at Fifth Third Field.  Each assembly in 2019 focuses on the benefits of exercise and being physically active.  The performances, typically held in the school gymnasium, include some of the same entertainment skits seen at the ballpark, plus some new material designed specifically for the schools.

All Dragons assemblies are performed free of charge for schools that sign up.  Participating elementary schools on board stretch from Sidney to Springboro.

The assemblies provide an introduction to the Dayton Dragons School Program, an incentive-based school fundraiser that provides prizes to students and allows the schools to keep a portion of ticket sales to Dragons games.

The Dragons are providing prizes as part of the program including team merchandise, an invitation to a Donatos Pizza Party with Dragons players, a Dragons Frisch’s Kids Club membership, and the grand prize, a Google Chromebook.

The Dragons “20th Season Celebration Game” is set for Saturday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.  Opening Night is Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

Dayton, Ohio—The Dayton Dragons today began announcing the names of the “20 Greatest Dragons” as part of the organization’s 20th Season Celebration.  Players selected on the list of 20 will be announced in random order leading up to the Dragons 20th Opening Night game on Thursday, April 4 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

The first announcement of the 20 Greatest Dragons is…

Austin Kearns

Kearns was on the field for the first Dragons game ever played in 2000 and spent the entire season with the club.  As a Dragons player, he is best remembered for his amazing streak of eight consecutive games with at least one home run from July 17-24, 2000. During the eight games, Kearns went 18 for 25 (.720) with 10 home runs, 20 runs batted in, 19 runs scored, and 10 walks.  Kearns’ home run streak ended two short of the all-time Minor League record set in 1928.  Kearns was selected as the Midwest League’s Co-Prospect of the Year in 2000, sharing the honor with Albert Pujols of Peoria.

Kearns went on to enjoy a 12-year Major League career from 2002-2013.  In his first full month in the Major Leagues, he was selected as the National League’s Rookie of the Month in May of 2002.  Kearns was third in the N.L. Rookie of the Year voting in 2002 with the Reds when he batted .315 with 13 home runs in 107 games, posting a .907 OPS.  He established career-highs in home runs (24) and runs batted in (86) with the Reds in 2006.  Kearns also played for the Nationals, Indians, Yankees, and Marlins, appearing in 1,125 MLB games.  He hit 121 big league home runs.

The 20 Greatest Dragons were selected based on a media vote of Dragons television, newspaper, radio, and internet reporters.  Additionally, during the 2019 season, the Dragons will be conducting a fan vote featuring one player per position to announce their all-time greatest lineup.

The Dragons will host their “20th Season Celebration Game” on Saturday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.  The game will match the 2019 Dragons (“Team 20”) against a team of Dragons alumni who are still playing in the Cincinnati Reds minor league system.

Ticket information for the Dragons 20th Season Celebration Game:  Dragons season ticket holders have received information via email.  All fans can go to www.DaytonDragons.com/CelebrationGame for more ticket information and to add their name to the ticket waitlist.  Single-game ticket sales will begin in mid-February.
