Dayton, Ohio—Bowling Green’s Zach Rutherford hit a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie and the Hot Rods held on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 4-3 on Monday night.  The Hot Rods completed a sweep of the four-game series at Fifth Third Field before a crowd of 8,053.

Bowling Green scored single runs in each of the first two innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead, but the Dragons rallied to tie the game in the third.  The inning began with back-to-back singles by Mark Kolozsvary and Leandro Santana before Jose Garcia’s sacrifice advanced the runners to second and third.  Randy Ventura delivered an infield single that brought in Kolozsvary, and Jeter Downs singled to left field to drive in Santana and even the score at 2-2.

But Bowling Green regained the lead in the fifth inning.  Taylor Walls walked to start the inning and Rutherford followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-2.  The homer was Rutherford’s fourth of the season.

The Dragons pulled within one run in the eighth when Montrell Marshall led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on a two-out single by Andy Sugilio to make it 4-3.  In the ninth, Ventura singled to center with two outs, but Bowling Green reliever Hunter Schryver struck out Dayton’s Jeter Downs looking to end the game.

Dragons starting pitcher Adrian Rodriguez worked the first four innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He was charged with the loss and fell to 3-3.

The Dragons finished with nine hits.  Ventura and Santana each had two.

The loss dropped the Dragons to 29-33 in the first half with six games to play.  Bowling Green improved to 41-21.
