OSU Hall of Fame QB and Memorial Tournament general chairman, Pandel Savic passes away

COLUMBUS, Ohio Pandel Savic, who quarterbacked Ohio State to its first Rose Bowl victory in 1950, passed away Tuesday in Columbus at the age of 92. Officials at Muirfield Village Golf Club, where Savic was the Memorial Tournament’s general chairman emeritus, announced the news of Savic’s passing.


Savic came to Ohio State in the mid-1940s from Girard, Ohio, and Girard High School; this after immigrating to the United States from his home country of Macedonia at age nine. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran upon enrolling at Ohio State in 1946, having previously enlisted and fought in World War II.


A three-year letterman (1947-48-49), Savic was Ohio State’s passing leader in both 1948 and 1949. He had a fine senior season for the Buckeyes, who won the Big Ten championship for coach Wes Fesler with a 5-1-1 conference mark and then completed the 7-1-2 campaign with a 17-14 Rose Bowl win over California.


Savic, who was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009, is one of the founding members of Muirfield Village Golf Club and served as general chairman of the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide for more than 30 years.

Atlanta United star Josef Martinez recent MLS Player of the Week




NEW YORK (Tuesday, June 5, 2018) – Atlanta United forward Josef Martínez was voted the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 14th week of the 2018 MLS season.

Martínez scored three goals in Atlanta’s 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union in front of 45,140 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday. The 25-year-old tied a league record with his fifth career MLS hat trick, accomplishing the feat in a mere 34 matches played. Atlanta sits first in the Eastern Conference standings with 29 points (9-3-2 record), while Martínez tops the league with 12 goals scored this season.

The Venezuela National Team forward began his day with a penalty kick goal in the 21stminute for an early 1-0 Atlanta advantage (Watch Goal). Martínez scored again in the 49thminute to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead. Miguel Almirón sent a perfectly placed ball into the box, threading a pass between Union goalkeeper Andre Blake and a defender to an open Martínez, who calmly finished with a deflection to the center of goal (Watch Goal).

Following a Philadelphia goal, Martínez then completed his hat trick in the 83rd minute to give Atlanta a 3-1 lead with a powerful penalty kick goal just inside the left post (Watch Goal). In 34 career MLS regular season matches, Martínez has scored 31 goals for a 0.91 goals-per-game average, the best in MLS history among players with at least 20 career goals scored.

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men’s soccer in the United States and Canada.

NEW YORK (Wednesday, June 6, 2018) – Columbus Crew SC goalkeeper Zack Steffen was voted the MLS Player of the Month presented by EA SPORTS™ by members of the media for the month of May of the 2018 MLS season.

The 23-year-old did not allow a single goal in five matches in May, with Crew SC compiling an undefeated 3-0-2 mark over the month as part of an active eight-game unbeaten streak. Steffen’s active 495-minute shutout streak is the ninth-longest for an individual goalkeeper in MLS history, the longest in Columbus history, and was the eighth-longest shutout streak for a team in the league. The seven shutouts posted by Steffen this season lead the league, helping Columbus to a current third-place standing in the Eastern Conference with 26 points (7-3-5 overall record).

Columbus began the month with a 0-0 draw at Seattle Sounders FC on May 5, with Steffen making one save in the match, a close-range diving stop on Clint Dempsey in the 73rdminute to keep his club even (Watch Save). Days later, Steffen made three saves in Crew SC’s 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on May 9.

The U.S. Men’s National Team standout continued his stellar play with a four-save performance in a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on May 12, including a diving stop off a free kick attempt by Diego Campos in the 31st minute (Watch Save). A week later, Steffen registered a season-high six saves in a 1-0 Crew SC victory at the New England Revolution on May 19, highlighted by a diving stop on Teal Bunbury’s shot in the 38th minute (Watch Save ). Steffen concluded the month with a three-save performance in a 0-0 draw at Sporting Kansas City on May 27, registering one of his 17 saves on the month with a diving stop on Daniel Salloi’s rocket from the top of the box in the 63rd minute (Watch Save).

Last Game:  Monday: Bowling Green 4, Dayton 3Zach Rutherford hit a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning as the Hot Rods completed a sweep of the four-game series. The Dragons collected nine hits including two each by Randy Ventura and Leandro Santana. Dragons relievers Austin Orewiler and Ryan Nutof combined for five scoreless innings.

2018 Team Notes

  • The Dragons did not commit an error in the four-game set with Bowling Green. It was the first time the Dragons have played a four-game series without an error since August 26-29, 2016 vs. Bowling Green.
  • The Dragons threatened to tie the franchise record for most home wins in a half (25), but they have come up short. They entered the four-game series with Bowling Green with 22 home wins in the first half, but they were swept in the series.
  • The Dragons are 22-14 at home; 7-19 on the road. Their team ERA at home is 4.44 compared to 6.76 on the road. They are scoring more runs per game on the road (5.0) than at home (4.3). They have allowed 27 unearned runs on the road compared to 12 at home.
  • The Dragons have been the streakiest team in professional baseball in 2018. They started the year with a three-game losing streak, won the next nine games, lost the next eight, won nine of 10, lost the next eight, won seven of eight, lost the next three, won four of six, and have lost the last seven.
  • The Dragons are 4-19 against Bowling Green and Lansing this season; 25-14 against the rest of the league.

2018 Individual Notes

  • Hendrik Clementina is hitting .329 on the year with a .615 slugging percentage. He is tied for fourth in the MWL in home runs with nine despite not having enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting lead (he is three short of the minimum). With his current averages, he would rank third in the league in batting average and second in slugging percentage if he qualified. Clementina was named the Cincinnati Reds Minor League Hitter of the Month for May after batting .329 with seven home runs and 20 RBI in the month.
  • Jeter Downs has an eight-game hitting streak, going 10 for 34, .294…John Ghyzel ranks first in the MWL lead in saves with 11.
