MLS announces Disciplinary Committee Decisions

NEW YORK (May 4, 2018) – The MLS Disciplinary Committee has found Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Anthony Blondell guilty of simulation/embellishment in the 83rd minute of Vancouver’s match against Real Salt Lake on April 27 (VIDEO). The MLS Disciplinary Committee has issued Blondell an undisclosed fine.

Columbus Crew SC defender Harrison Afful was found guilty of simulation/embellishment in the 83rd minute of Crew SC’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes on April 28 (VIDEO). The MLS Disciplinary Committee has issued Afful an undisclosed fine.

 

Fifth Third Bank donates Dragons tickets to several hundred Dayton area organizations

Dayton, Ohio—The Dayton Dragons announced today that Dragons stadium naming rights partner Fifth Third Bank has donated more than 100 Dragons season ticket packages to local charitable organizations for the 2018 season.  Additionally, Fifth Third Bank has donated the use of a luxury suite at Fifth Third Field for numerous Dragons games this season to host charitable organizations serving the Dayton region.

 

Fifth Third Bank will donate tickets to more than 100 non-profit organizations in the Dayton area this season.  Each organization will receive four tickets to 17 different Dragons games.  The list of recipients includes March of Dimes, the Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics of Greater Dayton, American Heart Association, Boys & Girls Club, Pink Ribbon Girls, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, the Alzheimer’s Association, Habitat for Humanity, Daybreak, Fisher House, and many others.

 

Dragons Team President, Bob Murphy, commented “Fifth Third Bank recognizes that these organizations are the heart of our region.  These groups usually have small professional staffs and limited resources. These ticket packages are a great tool that they can use to recognize the amazing volunteers, thank donors, and use in other ways to support their cause.”

Dayton Dragons recent roster moves

The Dayton Dragons announced the following roster changes on Monday:

 

Right-handed pitcher Luis Alecis has been assigned to Billings.

 

Right-handed pitcher Adrian Rodriguez has been promoted to Dayton from extended spring training.  He will start the game for the Dragons on Friday at Clinton.

 

The Dragons roster remains at the Midwest League limit of 25 players.

 

Note:  Rodriguez has not yet been assigned a uniform number.

 

NFL, NFLPA partner with Cigna to host May 14 Forum on Mental Health in Sports

​​As part of their ongoing efforts to promote player health and wellness, the NFL and NFL Players Association are teaming up with Cigna to host “Beyond The Physical: A Symposium on Mental Health in Sports” on May 14.​

The forum, which includes a series of panels featuring NFL players and legends as well as mental health organizations, caregivers, medical providers and media personalities, aims to raise awareness around mental health and promote a culture where everyone, including athletes, are encouraged to seek the help and support they need to achieve overall wellness.

The open dialogue will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center located at 800 Spring St. NW in Atlanta, Georgia.

Confirmed panelists include NFL wide receiver and co-founder of Project 375 BRANDON MARSHALL, former NFL cornerback ASHER ALLEN, former Pro Bowl running back WARRICK DUNN, Atlanta Falcons senior director of player affairs KEVIN WINSTON as well as representatives from Active MindsMental Health America (MHA) of Georgiathe American Psychological Association, and Campaign to Change Direction, among others. Shanti Das, founder of the “Silence The Shame” initiative for mental health awareness, will serve as the event emcee.

“Too often in the world of sports, discussions about mental wellness happen during a point of crisis, or when it’s too late,” said DR. NYAKA NIILAMPTI, Director of Player Wellness for the NFLPA. “However, we know that in order to excel athletically, mental health needs to have as much focus as physical health.  We feel fortunate to be able to use the platform of sports to engage in this conversation, and the more dialogue we can spark to increase awareness and decrease stigma around mental health, the more positive change that we will see.”

Each panelist will bring a unique perspective as they explore the various aspects of mental health, from increasing awareness to decreasing the stigma to the resources provided for those in need. Topics will range from managing the pressures of being a professional athlete, the mental health side of performance, programs available to the sports community and more.

“May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the NFL is pleased to partner with the NFLPA and Cigna to increase awareness and decrease the stigma around mental health with “Beyond the Physical: A Symposium on Mental Health in Sports,” said NFL Vice President of Wellness and Clinical Services, DWIGHT HOLLIER.  “This effort is especially important in light of the messages young athletes receive about toughness and the need to be strong all the time. Through our discussions with caregivers, athletes, professionals and others, we will shine a light on mental health in sports and discuss ways to support athletes and others on the journey toward total wellness.”

NFL announces offseason workout program dates for all teams

NFL OFFSEASON WORKOUT PROGRAM DATES ANNOUNCED

Voluntary offseason workout programs are intended to provide training, teaching and physical conditioning for players.  The calendar for 2018 is below.

As per Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each club’s official, voluntary nine-week offseason program is conducted in three phases:

Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.

Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Article 22 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that clubs may hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players. This minicamp, noted below, must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program.

New head coaches are entitled to conduct an additional voluntary veteran minicamp.  Any voluntary minicamp for veteran players must be conducted prior to the NFL Draft (April 26-28), but no earlier than week three of the club’s offseason workout program and after at least one week of the two weeks of Phase One activities that the clubs may hold pursuant to Article 21. This year, seven clubs will hold voluntary veteran minicamps, as noted below.

Each club may hold a rookie football development program for a period of seven weeks, which in 2018 may begin on May 14. During this period, no activities may be held on weekends, with the exception of one post-NFL Draft rookie minicamp, which may be conducted on either the first or second weekend following the draft. The dates of each club’s post-draft rookie minicamps are noted below.
