2018 Army High School Baseball Program, hosted by Dayton Dragons & Fifth Third Field, wraps up this week

PRESS RELEASE WRITTEN BY Josh Hess; COURTESY DAYTON DRAGONS MEDIA RELATIONS

Dayton, Ohio–The 2018 Army High School Baseball Program at Fifth Third Field continues Tuesday, May 1, for the final week of action. Games run throughout the week from Tuesday until Friday.

This spring, the Army stations throughout the Miami Valley have made high school baseball possible at Fifth Third Field. This is the 13th straight season that high school games have been played at the home of the Dayton Dragons.

On Tuesday, Milton-Union will play a double-header at Fifth Third Field beginning at 4:30 p.m. The first game, when Milton-Union faces Dixie, was originally scheduled for April 24, but was postponed and moved to this week. Both teams are in the Southwestern Buckeye League (SWBL), with Milton-Union holding a conference record of 5-6 and an overall record of 9-8. Dixie is winless this season, losing 10 conference games and 14 games overall on the year.

Game two is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start when Milton-Union faces Brookville in another SWBL matchup. Brookville, in the SWBL Southwestern division, is 6-3 in conference play and 8-6 overall this season. Key returners for Brookville include senior shortstop AJ Denlinger and junior pitcher Braden Moore, eight starters from last year also returned for the 2018 season.

Wednesday’s double-header begins at 4:30 p.m. when Urbana plays West Liberty. Urbana enters the matchup following a tough end to the month of April when the team lost six of its final eight games. The team is currently 4-7 in Central Buckeye Conference play and 7-10 overall. Urbana’s Kaleb Bowdle leads the league in batting average, hitting .596 on the season. West Liberty has had a good start to the season sitting at 9-4 overall and 7-4 in Ohio Heritage Conference play. Five seniors returned this season including Thomas Allen, a four-year varsity starter who has committed to play at Miami University, Hamilton Campus.

Game two on Wednesday features Springfield against Tippecanoe and is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start. Both teams play in the Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC). Springfield is 1-7 in GWOC play and 7-13 overall on the season. Key players for this season include seniors Bryce Ames, Avery Swigart and Jaykob Cave-Stevens. Tippecanoe is on top of the GWOC North with an 11-1 conference record and 19-2 overall and was ranked third in the Week Two OHSBCA Coach’s Poll. The team is led by senior pitcher Zach Losey, a Ball State commit, as well as two sets of twins, Cole and Clay Barhorst, and Miles and Mason McClurg.

The lone game scheduled for Thursday will pit Lehman Catholic against Riverside, two Northwest Central Conference (NWCC) teams. Lehman Catholic is in second place in the league with a 3-0 record and 6-4 overall. The team finished second in league play last year and has not lost a conference game in over two years after finishing 14-0 in NWCC play in 2017. Riverside is loaded with upperclassmen, including seven seniors and two juniors on its roster.

Due to inclement weather over the last few weeks, two makeup games are scheduled for Friday. Franklin-Monroe plays Arcanum at 4:30 and then Mississiniwa Valley faces Bradford at 7:00 p.m. Mississiniwa Valley and Bradford played on April 6 in a game that Mississinawa Valley won 5-3 in extra innings.

The Dayton Dragons have been hosting the Miami Valley’s best baseball teams since 2006 and are proud to continue the tradition for a 13th consecutive year. A complete list of high school baseball games scheduled to be played at Fifth Third Field can be found below.

All games are free to attend and the media is invited to cover them. Gates will open 30 minutes prior to the first game played that day. High schools may provide their own PA announcers, broadcasters, cheer squads, and national anthem singers.

The games at Fifth Third Field also serve as a fundraiser for the participating schools. This year’s series of games will raise approximately $30,000 for the schools to help with the cost of uniforms, equipment, and bus transportation.
