MLB & Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment team up to commemorate silver anniversary of timeless family comedy with special events all season long

Major League Baseball and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment today announced plans to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Sandlot through a unique partnership that includes festivities at MLB ballparks and supported events all season long. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases “The Sandlot” — 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Blu-ray on March 27 to commemorate the significant milestone.

In this beloved family-favorite movie, it’s the early 1960s and fifth-grader Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) has just moved into town with his folks (Karen Allen and Denis Leary). Kids call him a dork — he can’t even throw a baseball! But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood team recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field. It’s the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses and fearsome confrontations with the dreaded beast and its owner. With the game of baseball playing such a pivotal part of the story, it is a natural fit for MLB to celebrate the film’s anniversary through events and screenings at its ballparks.

Elements of the collaboration include The Sandlot-themed games at ballparks across the country, screenings of the film around MLB-supported events, co-branded merchandise available for purchase online and at retail stores, giveaways of The Sandlot – 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Blu-ray™, and The Sandlot-inspired PLAY BALL t-shirts that will be worn by players while taking batting practice during each Club’s official PLAY BALL WEEKEND activation this season. PLAY BALL WEEKEND features a variety of youth engagement activities and was designed by MLB to celebrate youth baseball & softball participation in communities throughout the country and in Canada. Also at select Club themed nights and MLB events, the film’s director, David Mickey Evans, and members of the original cast will attend and participate in pregame activities. All Clubs hosting a themed game are working with Boys & Girls Club of America to benefit local Club affiliates.

Currently, more than 20 MLB Clubs have designated themed games dedicated to “The Sandlot” and its 25th anniversary with more teams expected to add dates in the coming weeks. More details on themed night dates, activities and single-game ticket purchase information are available at MLB.com/thesandlot.

The special 25th Anniversary collector’s edition Blu-ray of The Sandlot available on March 27 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment includes a set of 10 custom Topps® baseball cards — featuring Scotty Smalls, Benny “The Jet” and the rest of the ragtag roster — created exclusively for this release. The major-league treatment continues with an all-new booklet filled with behind-the-scenes photos from the film director’s personal archive and an all-new, full-color poster.

Fox Consumer Products has collaborated with several licensees to commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Sandlot. Fans can find products ranging from Tervis tumblers to New Era baseball caps at select retailers, MLB team stores and on MLBshop.com and an all-new collection of exclusive Sandlot merchandise was just released on Shop.FoxMovies.com. The collection includes a wide selection of apparel and never-before-seen products.

Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar and Major League Baseball will partner to host a showcase baseball tournament in Puerto Rico during the 2018 baseball season.

Puerto Rico 12 (PR12) will take place July 31 to August 5 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, in San Juan. The objective of PR12 is to select the best 120 Puerto Rican-born amateur players (ages 16-19) that have college eligibility. These selected players will participate in a showcase baseball tournament in front of Major League Scouts and College Recruiters. Interested players, coaches, and volunteers can find more information at www.alomarsports.com/events/pr-12.

“I am thrilled to partner with Major League Baseball and the Commissioner’s Office on this amazing initiative for youth baseball in my home country of Puerto Rico. With the help of the Toronto Blue Jays, we have been able to do something similar in Canada over the last several years and the impact on baseball development in that country has been substantial. With encouragement from Commissioner Manfred, it is my goal to bring this same opportunity back to Puerto Rico for amateur players. I am really excited to see the talent that Puerto Rico has to offer.” – Roberto Alomar

“Major League Baseball is proud to work on this new showcase event alongside Roberto, whose commitment to growing the game in Puerto Rico is admirable,” said Tony Reagins, Senior Vice President of Youth Programs, MLB. “This event will help ex pand the pipeline of the island’s most talented amateur baseball players to decision-makers on the professional and collegiate levels. Our priority with youth and amateur players is providing opportunities, and this event is a very big one.”

Six teams will represent the various geographical regions of Puerto Rico. The teams will play a five-game tournament along with participating in a skills day. Interested players must register for a PR12 Tryout Camp, closest to the geographical region where they live. During the PR12 tryout camps, players will be evaluated on their ability to hit, throw, field and run. Players can sign up for a PR12 Tryout Camp by emailing pr12@alomarsports.com.

Players will be selected by a committee made up of Alomar Sports Inc., the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, and the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation. Final rosters will be announced on June 30. Each team will have 20 players along with 3 coaches.

Roberto Alomar assembled a 17-year Hall of Fame career in the Major Leagues from 1988-2004. The standout second baseman help the Toronto Blue Jays to consecutive World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993. He made 12 consecutive All-Star appearances between 1990-2001. Alomar earned 10 Gold Gloves in his career. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 1992 American League Championship Series and batted .480 (12 for 25) with 6 RBI and 4 stolen bases in the 1993 World Series. Overall, Alomar’s Clubs (Blue Jays, Orioles, Indians) participated in the Post Season seven in ten opportunities between 1990-2001. Before he entered Cooperstown in 2011, the Blue Jays retired Alomar’s number 12 – the first time the franchise had ever so honored a player in its history.

Alomar was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and attended Luis Munoz Rivera High School in Salinas. Roberto’s father Sandy and brother Sandy Jr. have both been long time Major League players and coaches.

Alomar was named MLB’s Special consultant in Puerto Rico in 2017, and also serves as a Special Advisor to the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club.

In addition to the tryouts in April, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association will be hosting the Puerto Rico Series between the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins. Games will be played on April 17th and 18th and Hiram Bithron Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The two-game set, which will serve as Twins home games, will be broadcast on FS1 on Tuesday, April 17th at 7:10 p.m. ET and on ESPN for “Wednesday Night Baseball” on April 18 at 7:10 p.m. ET. MLB has previously held regular season games in San Juan in 2001, when the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays opened the regular season; in 2003 and 2004, when the Montreal Expos played a portion of their home schedule at Hiram Bithorn Stadium; and in 2010, when the Miami Marlins hosted the New York Mets.

NHL Board of Governors approves changes to Rule 78.7 (ii) governing Coach’s Challenges for goaltender interference

(Free-Extras.com)

Changes Will Be Implemented for Games as of Wednesday, March 28

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK/TORONTO (March 27, 2018) – The National Hockey League’s Board of Governors has approved changes to Rule 78.7 (ii) Coach’s Challenge – Goaltender Interference, the League announced today.

The changes were recommended by the NHL’s General Managers at their March Meeting and subsequently approved by the NHL/NHLPA Competition Committee.

The updated rule, as written below (with changes underlined), will be implemented for games as of Wednesday, March 28.

(ii) Scoring Plays Involving Potential “Interference on the Goalkeeper”

(c) The standard for overturning the call in the event of a “GOAL” call on the ice is that the NHL Situation Room (which shall include a former referee in the Officiating Department in the decision-making process), after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Referee who made the original call, determines that the goal should have been disallowed due to “Interference on the Goalkeeper,” as described in Rules 69.1, 69.3 and 69.4.

(d) The standard for overturning the call in the event of a “NO GOAL” call on the ice is that the NHL Situation Room (which shall include a former referee in the Officiating Department in the decision-making process), after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Referee who made the original call, determines that the goal on the ice should have been allowed because either: (i) there was no actual contact of any kind initiated by the attacking Player with the goalkeeper; or (ii) the attacking Player was pushed, shoved or fouled by a defending Player causing the attacking Player to come into contact with the goalkeeper; or (iii) the attacking Player’s positioning within the crease did not impair the goalkeeper’s ability to defend his goal and, in fact, had no discernible impact on the play.

WAS DAY 85 OF 2018

SEWARD’S DAY (ALASKA)

On March 30, 1867, thanks to Secretary of State William H. Seward, the United States bought the Alaska territory from Russia. Though it was known at the time as “Seward’s Folly,” the purchase was a real bargain—the entire state of Alaska cost $7,200,000, or about two cents per acre. Seward’s Day commemorates the signing of the treaty and is observed in Alaska on the last Monday in March.
