MALKIN SCORES HAT TRICK IN MURRAY’S EMOTIONAL RETURN TO CREASE

Evgeni Malkin (3-0—3) scored his first hat trick of the season and Matt Murray made 40 saves in his first appearance since his father passed away earlier this month to guide the Penguins to their sixth straight win at PPG Paints Arena.

“For sure this one meant a little more to me personally, but still, that’s all you can really do is just take things one shot at a time and just play your heart out on every single shot. That’s what I tried to do.” – Matt Murray

* Malkin netted his 12th career regular-season hat trick and boosted his 2017-18 totals to 26-29—55 (48 GP), tied for the fifth-most goals in the NHL this season. Only Alex Ovechkin has scored more hat tricks since Malkin made his NHL debut in 2006-07.

Sidney Crosby collected one helper to extend his assist/point streak to 10 games (3-17—20), the longest active runs in the NHL.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS RALLY TO MATCH ANOTHER NHL RECORD

The Golden Knights scored three times in a span of 53 seconds in the final two minutes of regulation to erase a 2-1 deficit and improve to 33-12-4 (70 points) this season. Vegas matched the NHL record for most wins by a team in its inaugural season – with 33 games remaining in its 2017-18 campaign.

* The Golden Knights own the best record in the Western Conference standings and moved within one point of the League-leading Lightning (34-13-3, 71 points), who suffered a 3-1 loss on Tuesday. Vegas also improved to 14-9-2 (30 points) as visitors, five road wins shy of the NHL record for most by a team in its inaugural season.

DUCKS SNAP BRUINS’ POINT STREAK

Adam Henrique scored twice to extend his point streak to six games (6-2—8) and help the Ducks snap the Bruins’ point streak at 18 contests (14-0-4). Anaheim improved to 9-0-1 in its last 10 games against Boston dating to Oct. 31, 2013 (BOS: 1-8-1), including nine consecutive wins.

* The Bruins were the sixth team in the past 20 seasons to register a point streak of at least 18 games, joining the Lightning (14-0-4 in 2003-04; 18 GP), Red Wings (17-0-3 in 2005-06; 20 GP), Sharks (18-0-2 in 2007-08; 20 GP), Blackhawks (21-0-3 in 2012-13; 24 GP) and Blue Jackets (17-0-1 in 2016-17; 18 GP).

HUTCHINSON BACKSTOPS JETS TO SEVENTH STRAIGHT HOME WIN

After appearing in the AHL All-Star Classic on Monday, Michael Hutchinson made 23 saves in his NHL season debut to backstop the Central Division-leading Jets (30-13-8, 68 points) to their seventh straight home win and an 18-3-1 (37 points) record at Bell MTS Place overall. Winnipeg matched its longest home win streak of the season, a mark set from Nov. 14 – Dec. 11, 2017 (7-0-0).

* Did You Know? Winnipeg began a 10-game homestand on Tuesday, tied for the third-longest in NHL history.

ICYMI: Rickard Rakell hosted 17-year-old cancer fighter Katie Hawley as an honorary Duck at 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend where she attended all on-ice events, took part in media day and walked the red carpet with her favorite player.

Ryan Day bypasses NFL offers; gets promoted to Offensive Coordinator at Ohio State

Ryan Day

2017 saw Buckeyes lead the Big Ten in passing, total offense and points per game

Jan. 23, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ryan Day, the second-year Ohio State quarterbacks coach who also was co-offensive coordinator this past season, has been promoted to offensive coordinator by Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Day will continue to coach the Ohio State quarterbacks and work with Kevin Wilson to lead the Ohio State offense with additional adjustments to his responsibilities forthcoming.

“Ryan is clearly a very talented coach who has been an outstanding addition to our program,” Meyer said. “He has been approached by other schools numerous times this off-season for coordinator and head coach opportunities, and by the National Football League for a coordinator opportunity. I am pleased that he has elected to continue to work on this staff and to lead, mentor and coach the terrific young men we have in this program.”

In Day’s first year on staff last year working alongside Kevin Wilson, the two helped the Ohio State offense lead the Big Ten in rushing yards per game (243.2), passing yards (262.8), total offense (506.0) and scoring (41.1). Ohio State’s offense set school single season records for passes attempted (440) and completed (287), and had the second-highest totals for passing yards with 3,679 and touchdown passes with 39.

Additionally, the Buckeyes were seventh nationally in total offense in 2017, 17th in rushing and sixth in scoring.

“Ohio State is an outstanding place to be a coach, and Columbus is a great city for a young family,” Day said. “I really enjoyed my first season with this program and I’m looking forward to the 2018 season and the opportunity to coach a very talented and hungry group of players.”

Day recently completed his 16th season in coaching, a tenure that includes two seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers, respectively. He and his wife, Christina, are the parents of three children; a son, Ryan, Jr., and two daughters: Grace and Ourania.
