COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s tennis seniors Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed are in California for the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. The tournament includes prequalifying Saturday-Sunday, qualifying Tuesday-Wednesday and main draw action Thursday-Sunday (Oct. 5-8). Prequalifying matches will be held on the Pepperdine campus, with qualifying and main draw matches at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Sneed begins play for the Buckeyes in the 64-player singles prequalifying draw at 3:15 p.m. ET Saturday where she will take on Sarah Dvorak of Texas Tech. Three wins in prequalifying are needed to advance to the qualifying draw.

Sanford is in qualifying singles and will pair with Sneed in the qualifying doubles draw.

Sneed and Sanford This Season

Sanford, ranked 33rd, started her year in California, participating in the Oracle ITA Masters. In both singles and mixed doubles, she won her first round singles match before falling in round two.

Sneed opened her campaign at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic at Furman, winning the Flight 2 title with three victories. She paired with freshman Mary Beth Hurley to finish third in their doubles flight.

Buckeyes at the 2016 All-Americans

Anna Sanford competed in singles qualifying and the doubles main draw at the ITA All-Americans last year. She and Miho Kowase, the No. 4 seed in doubles, fell in their first round match, 8-6, but posted a consolation win. In singles, Sanford dropped a three set match in the first round of qualifying but rebounded to win a consolation match in three sets.

Francesca Di Lorenzo won the All-American title a season ago, the first Buckeye to win the tournament. It was the second of three third ITA national titles for the Buckeye, as she went on to defend her National Indoor title later that fall.

Looking Ahead

The annual ITA Midwest Regional begins Oct. 12 and will be hosted by Michigan in An Arbor.

Later this fall, the Buckeye squad is also set to compete at the Tennessee Fall Invite Oct. 27-29, the ASU Thunderbird Nov. 3-5 and the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic that same weekend.

MLB announces 2018 ”MLB Little League Classic” to feature Mets, Phillies

Major League Baseball (MLB), the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and Little League International jointly announced today that the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets will play in the second “MLB Little League Classic” in Williamsport, Pa. during the 2018 MLB Championship Season. The special Regular Season contest, as well as ancillary activities by each club, will take place on Sunday, August 19th, with the game airing nationally that evening on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and ESPN Radio at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

MLB and the MLBPA will host the next iteration of the “MLB Little League Classic,” which successfully launched in August 2017 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals, at the renovated Historic Bowman Field, the home of the Phillies’ Class-A Williamsport Crosscutters of the NY-Penn League. Once again, the participating players, coaches and families of the 2018 Little League Baseball World Series, as well as local Williamsport youth baseball & softball organizations, will fill a significant portion of the capacity at Bowman Field.

Major Leaguers on the Phillies and Mets will attend Little League Baseball World Series games earlier in the day on August 19th, which again demonstrates the players’ passion and commitment to helping grow the game at the youth level.

Historic Bowman Field, in which Major League Baseball and the State of Pennsylvania invested a multi-million dollar renovation prior to the 2017 MLB Little League Classic, opened in 1926. It is the second oldest Minor League ballpark in the United States. More than 560 Major Leaguers, including Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Bill Mazeroski, Jim Rice and Jim Bunning, have worn a professional baseball uniform for Williamsport.

The Little League Baseball® World Series is an international championship tournament for children, ages 10-12, held annually in Williamsport, the headquarters for Little League International. Each year, countries from around the world compete on a global stage, with games airing on ESPN and streamed via the ESPN App.

Major League Baseball and the Players Association continue to commit resources to growing the games of baseball and softball, on both the grassroots and developmental levels. In particular, MLB and the MLBPA jointly support a variety of programs through the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation, including the Elite Development Invitational. Through the Major League Baseball Players Trust, the charitable arm of the MLBPA, Players are dedicated to providing baseball and baseball related experiences to underserved youth, special needs youth and the children of veterans and active military personnel. The PLAY BALL initiative, which is supported by Little League International, USA Baseball, USA Softball, Minor League Baseball and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, is MLB’s largest effort to encourage young people and communities to participate in baseball- or softball-related activities, including formal leagues, events and casual forms of play. PLAY BALL events have become MLB’s signature youth engagement activity during the professional and amateur baseball and softball calendar, including key dates throughout the MLB offseason and into the World Series. MLB and all 30 Clubs have committed $40 million of resources toward the growth and sustainability of the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program. Additionally, MLB supports developmental initiatives aimed at engaging underserved communities, particularly through the MLB Youth Academies and amateur development camps such as the DREAM Series and the Breakthrough Series.

Major League Baseball announced this week that the owners of the Major League Clubs have unanimously approved the new ownership group of the Miami Marlins led by incoming control person Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter. The vote was conducted via conference call today. The approval is contingent upon the closing of the sale transaction with the current owners of the Marlins, which is expected within the next week.

Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said: “I wish the best to Jeffrey Loria and David Samson. During their tenures, the Marlins won the 2003 World Series, hosted this season’s successful All-Star Week at spectacular Marlins Park and eagerly supported our efforts to grow the game internationally. I congratulate Mr. Sherman on receiving approval from the Major League Clubs as the new control person of the Marlins and look forward to Mr. Jeter’s ownership and CEO role following his extraordinary career as a player.”

Indians announce 2017 ALDS tickets to go on sale Friday, September 29 at 10 a.m.

Fans can unlock priority access to 2017 ALCS and World Series presales with 2018 Season Ticket purchase

Single game tickets for the American League Division Series at Progressive Field go on sale on Friday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. online only at Indians.com.

2018 Season Ticket plan gets priority access to potential 2017 ALCS, World Series presales

Fans can unlock priority access to potential 2017 ALCS and World Series presales at Progressive Field by purchasing a 2018 Season Ticket package.

Those fans who place a deposit, select seats and either pay in full or are on an approved payment plan will have access to potential 2017 ALCS and World Series presales before the general public.

NEW: Indians, StubHub align for secure secondary purchasing

While Indians.com remains the best option for purchasing Indians tickets, the Indians have aligned exclusively with StubHub, the secondary ticket market leader and official re-seller of MLB.

For potential 2017 Postseason sellouts, fans who are unable to secure tickets from Indians.com are encouraged to use StubHub for the most secure purchase experience.

“StubHub provides superior and consistent service for our fans, along with the most secure purchasing option on the secondary market,” said Tim Salcer, Indians Vice President of Sales and Service. “This requirement will protect our fans who must purchase on the secondary market.”

Under this agreement, any fan who re-sells Indians Postseason tickets on a secondary site other than StubHub – and the fan who purchases those tickets – are subject to have their tickets revoked or the tickets’ bar codes canceled.
