Tournament information on Nationwide Children’s Championship

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship is held annually at The Ohio State University Golf Club, Scarlet Course. It is the third of four Web.com Tour Finals events that help determine which players will earn PGA TOUR membership each season. At the end of the four Finals events, PGA TOUR cards will be awarded to the 25 leading money winners on the Web.com Tour with the remaining 25 cards going to those players who earn the most cumulative money in the four Finals events.

The top-25 from the Web.com Tour Regular Season will carry their earnings into the Finals. Their order of priority will be determined at the conclusion of the Finals.

The exempt player from the Web.com Tour Regular Season Top 25 will be identified at the conclusion of the four Finals events, using combined Regular Season and Finals money. Therefore, any Top-25 player can earn the coveted No. 1 position if he performs well enough in the four Finals events. A second full exemption will be awarded to the highest cumulative earner among the four Finals events, if different from the No. 1 player among the Top 25.

The ordering of all 50 players after the Web.com Tour Finals will be done on an alternating basis, beginning with the No. 1 player from the combined Regular Season and Finals money list and followed by the leading money winner from the four Web.com Tour Finals. The sequence then alternates between the combined Regular Season and Finals money list (3, 5, 7, 9, etc.) and the Web.com Tour Finals money list (4, 6, 8, 10, etc.) through the 25th player on both lists.

The field for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship will compete over 72 holes of stroke play, with a cut to the top-60 players and ties after 36 holes. Golf Channel will broadcast tournament coverage from Thursday’s opening round to the trophy presentation on Sunday in high definition.

Since its inception in 2007, the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship has donated more than $4,475,000 in support of pediatric cancer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Nationwide Children’s Championship announces annual ceremonial first tee shot for Thursday morning at 7:15 am

Columbus, Ohio – Tournament Officials announced today the 11th annual ceremonial first tee shot, named First Shot to Fight Cancer. The shot will mark the beginning of tournament competition for the 2017 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship at The Ohio State University Golf Club – Scarlet Course. TheFirst Shot to Fight Cancer ceremony will begin at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, immediately prior to the tournament’s first starting time. Professional tee times for Thursday and Friday start at 7:30 a.m. on tee Nos. 1 and 10.

Hitting the First Shot to Fight Cancer at the 2017 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship will be, “Patient Champion”, 14-year-old Jack Willis of Lewis Center, Ohio. Jack’s story began when he was 13 years old, shortly after having his tonsils removed. Normally an athletic, lively kid, Jack wasn’t eating or drinking and lacked any energy to walk or move. All he ever wanted to do was sleep for hours and hours. Something was wrong.

After a blood test, Jack was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he received his diagnosis; Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

The Willis family’s worst fear was confirmed. Jack had cancer.

He began his first round of chemotherapy right away and struggled with sickness. The first three weeks Jack wasn’t allowed out of his room at all due to fevers and couldn’t leave the inpatient floor with his weakened immune system. It was during this time that Jack really got to know the nursing staff, therapists and doctors at Nationwide Children’s who would become his second family.

After enduring six long months of treatment, Jack was released from the hospital in August 2015.

“Nationwide Children’s Hospital will always have a special place in my heart. The people mean so much to me. Everyone is very honest and caring. It was a safe place. I’ve made so many friends there, the staff and other families going through the same thing. Even to this day, I look forward to going to the hospital for checkups just to see my doctors, nurses and therapists,” says Jack.

This month, Jack celebrates his second year out of the hospital with no signs of disease.

Today, Jack is thriving. He just started the 9th grade at Olentangy High School. He loves playing lacrosse and golf and watching OSU football and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jack enjoys spending time with his family, friends and dog, Brutus.
