Friday’s Top qualifiers from NHRA Route 66 Nationals: Brittany Force, Hight, Gray and Matt Smith

AT ROUTE 66 RACEWAY

JOLIET, Ill. — Robert Hight powered to the Funny Car qualifying lead Friday evening at the 20th annual Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by K&N Filters at Route 66 Raceway.

Brittany Force (Top Fuel), Tanner Gray (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also provisional qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 13th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Hight set both ends of the track record after a 3.851-second pass at 334.73 mph in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS during the second qualifying session. He is aiming for his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and is currently chasing his first win of 2017.

“We had a pretty good idea that track records were going to fall this weekend, and the advancement of Funny Cars over the years allows us to put these exciting runs together for the fans,” Hight said. “If we are able to lock things down as well as we know we can, then in the night session tomorrow there is no reason we can’t improve these numbers.”

Jack Beckman landed second in Funny Car qualifying with a 3.856 at 330.23 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T. Courtney Force rounded out the top three in preliminary qualifying, notching a 3.880 at 331.36 in her Advance Auto Parts Chevy Camaro.

Force leads the Top Fuel category with a run of 3.711 at 323.04 in her Monster Energy dragster during her second pass of the day. She is searching for her first No. 1 qualifier on the year and seventh of her career.

“Our second run was pretty awesome, since it was a clean run and the conditions were perfect,” Force said. “Every run feels different, but I could tell from this second run that we would be shooting up the standings, and we have a time that we are going to try and improve upon tomorrow.”

Tony Schumacher sits second in the preliminary qualifying after a 3.758 at 325.37 in his U.S. Army dragster, while Shawn Langdon is third with a 3.759 at 319.37 in his Global Electronics dragster.

In Pro Stock, Gray currently holds the top spot after driving to a 6.591 at 208.84 in his Gray Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro during the second session. He is looking for the second No. 1 qualifier of his rookie season.

“My team did a great job of working on my car and I feel like I had a better handle on my car than in Norwalk,” Gray said. “I know we have great horsepower and the guys at the shop put a great car out each week, and I know that if I drive well there is no reason that I can’t have success like this at each event.”

Greg Anderson is second in preliminary qualifying after a 6.600 at 209.20 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. Drew Skillman is in the third spot with a 6.605 at 208.04 in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro during his second qualifying pass.

Smith finished atop the Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying order with an elapsed time track record 6.829 at 195.19 in his second pass of the day. He is aiming for his 26th career No. 1 qualifier and his second consecutive this season.

“The last two races have been awesome for us, especially getting the No. 1 qualifier in Norwalk the last time out,” Smith said. “It’s good to come here and be No. 1 and prove that we could do it again, but I think we are here to stay this year and we will make a run at the championship.”

Scotty Pollacheck is in the No. 2 slot after a 6.883 at 193.65 in his Extended Protection Suzuki during his second pass of the day, while Hector Arana Jr. sits at third with a 6.884 at 194.97 in his Lucas Oil Buell.

Qualifying at the 20th annual Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by K&N Filters continues at 3:15 and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at Route 66 Raceway.

Finishing second and third at the Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, BAR1 Motorsports heads north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Ryan Lewis will join Don Yount in the No. 20 Gas Monkey Energy PC, while a Canadian duo of James Vance and Garett Grist will share the driving duties of the No. 26 car.
Last week at Watkins Glen, it was Don Yount, Buddy Rice and Daniel Burkett that put the Gas Monkey Energy car on the second step of the podium. Yount did a great job in the opening session while Rice kept up the charge taking the middle stint. Burkett, back in the car after a rough outing at Sebring, did a great job bringing the car to the checkered flag, posting the 20 car’s fastest lap along the way.
Team owner Brian Alder decided to get in on the action, partnering with Gustavo Yacaman and Derek Jones. After a fantastic start by Yacaman, unfortunately, Jones made contact with the wall during his middle stint. The crew did a great job get the car back in the race and Alder took charge bringing the car home in third.
“I had my hands full out there,” noted Alder. “We were anticipating rain and we did get a little late in the race. The Glen is a challenging track and being out there with three other classes of cars certainly gets your attention. There’s always something going on! I do have to say, Gustavo was incredible as always. His save on the first lap was spectacular. I thought it was over before it even started.” [VIDEO]
This week at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, the WeatherTech Championship returns to the standard format of 2:40 minute race. Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, formerly Mosport is a 2.5 mile natural terrain road course and comes with a rich heritage. Truly one of the greatest race tracks in North America and the drivers love it.
“It’ll be fun to see Ryan and Don in the No. 20 Gas Monkey Energy car together,” said Brian Alder. “They pair up and communicate extremely well. They spend quite a bit of time testing and it’s no secret, Ryan is very quick. I’m expecting a good run out of them.”
“James Vance has a lot of racing experience in a lot of different race cars, including PC” Alder continued. “Garett Grist is young gun with a ton of open wheel experience and he drove a PC in this year’s 12 Hours of Sebring.  I think it’s great we could put two locals in the car and give the Canadian fans something extra to cheer about. These guys are local favorites and should do a good job in the No. 26 car.”

Practice for the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix gets underway Friday with a pair of WeatherTech Championship sessions. Saturday’s schedule includes WeatherTech Championship qualifying from 12:05 to 1:35 p.m. ET, followed by a two-hour Continental Tire Challenge race starting at 2:50 p.m. ET.

The IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda also has a pair of 45-minute races on the schedule this weekend, at 5:30 p.m. ET Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Both of those races, as well as the Continental Tire Challenge race and WeatherTech Championship qualifying will be streamed live on IMSA.com.

3GT Racing travels to Canada this weekend for seventh IMSA race

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO (July 7, 2017)–  This will be the first time at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for 3GT Racing and the Lexus RC F GT3 cars, No. 14 and No. 15. And the first time for driver Jack Hawksworth of the No. 15 car.

Hawksworth recorded the fastest lap of the race in the GTD class in last weekend’s six-hour endurance race at Watkins Glen, NY. Both cars finished in the top ten at the Sahlen’s Six Hour of the Glen, the No. 14 car finished sixth, the

“We are so close to getting the result we deserve,” Hawksworth said. “We have a very fast car and it was evident at Watkins Glen, that we’re better in the pits in terms of tire change and things like that. And in sprint races, like the one at CTMP, it’s absolutely crucial to be quick.  I’ve been saying that we’ve been getting better, inching closer and closer and it feels like right now we’re knocking on the door. Hopefully this is the weekend we get the win.”

Alon, co-driver of the No. 15 Lexus RC F GT3, has a little more experience at CTMP. Alon has driven at Mosport for the last three years, finishing third in the PC class in 2016.

“It’s a great course, very cool,” Alon said. “It’s very high speed, great flow. Our car is really good and I think we have a serious shot at doing well. We will have to have a good race with no issues, no penalties, and if that happens, I believe we’ll be at the podium.”

The No. 14 team. Pruett and Karam, has earned four top-ten results in the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3. Both drivers are fond of CTMP and have experience at the 2.459-mile twisting track.

Karam won the pole at CTMP in the Pro Mazda Championship race in 2012, he said it’s his favorite track. “I’m really excited to be back at CTMP,” he said. “There’s just something about this track that fits my style. It’s very high speed, really flowing, a great rhythm track. It’s a lot of fun and I can’t wait to get back out there.”

Pruett raced the prototype class at CTMP in 2014 and 2015. He also raced Trans Am and IMSA and between them, visited Mosport three times and won three times.

“I think the Lexus RC F GT3 has shown real strength with fast tracks and fast turns so hopefully this will be a good track for us,” Pruett said. “I feel like we turned a corner in Detroit that carried through to The Glen. I hope we continue the momentum through to our time here at Mosport.”

The green flag drops on the Mobil Sports Car Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. The race can be viewed live on FS1 beginning at noon and on FOX Sports Go. The race will also be streamed live on IMSA.tv and the IMSA Mobile App.
