2017 MLS All-Stars to play Real Madrid in All-Star Game at Chicago’s Soldier Field

Star-studded rosters to clash on August 2 at Soldier Field in Chicago and live on FS1, UniMás, TSN and TVA Sports

NEW YORK (April 15, 2017) – MLS today announced that reigning UEFA Champions League winner Real Madrid will face the best of MLS in the 2017 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target on August 2, at Soldier Field in Chicago.  The game will air at 9 p.m. ET on FS1, UniMás, TSN and TVA Sports domestically as well as across 170 countries globally.

Established in 1902, Real Madrid is one of the most successful clubs in the world, having claimed a record 32 La Liga championships and 11 UEFA Champions League titles, as well as capturing the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup on multiple occasions. Under the direction of the legendary Zinedine Zidane, Los Blancos currently sit atop the La Liga table and are in the quarterfinals of the 2016-2017 UEFA Champions League tournament. The club is home to internationally renowned stars such as four-time Ballon d’Or recipient Cristiano Ronaldo, 27-year-old star Gareth Bale, and four-time La Liga Best Defender Sergio Ramos.

This will mark the first time a team from Spain’s La Liga will appear in the MLS All-Star Game. The MLS All-Stars have previously faced clubs from the England’s Premier League, Germany’s Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A, Mexico’s Liga MX and the Scottish Premier League, owning an 8-4-1 record against some of the world’s most decorated clubs.

Soldier Field, with a capacity of 61,500, has played host to some of the most exciting sporting and entertainment events in the world including CONCACAF Gold Cup matches, World Cup Qualifiers, 1994 FIFA World Cup matches, and last summer’s Copa America Centenario. Not only has Soldier Field hosted a wealth of international soccer events, the venerable Chicago landmark also has a rich MLS legacy, as it was home to the Chicago Fire for the club’s first four seasons, from 1998-2001, then again from 2003-2005. The Fire owned a 62-23-10 record (.705 winning percentage) in their home games at Soldier Field, a span which also includes the club’s three appearances in MLS Cup.

In addition to the match, MLS will host nearly a week of events surrounding the game, including concerts, community service initiatives, player appearances, as well as an additional showcase match featuring the best young players from across the league.

Crew SC looking to get back in the win column hosts arch-rival Toronto FC tonight at 8:00 pm

COLUMBUS — Columbus Crew SC (3-2-1, 10 points) hosts Toronto FC (1-0-4, 7 points) at MAPFRE Stadium tomorrow, Saturday, April 15 in the first of three matches for the Trillium Cup this season. The match kicks-off at 8:00 p.m. ET and is set to be televised regionally on The CW Columbus, Spectrum Sports and BCSN2, with Neil Sika, Dwight Burgess and Marisa Contipelli on the call. Coverage on The CW Columbus begins at 8:00 p.m. ET. Exclusively on Spectrum Sports and BCSN2, “Crew SC Matchday,” the pre-match show, begins at 7:30 p.m. ET, with “Crew SC Post-Match” immediately following the action.Saturday’s match also airs locally on the radio on CD102.5 FM in English, featuring simulcast audio from the television broadcast. La Mega 103.1 FM has the match airing in Spanish, with Juan Valladares behind the microphone. The Spanish radio calls are also set to be streamed in Spanish on the LaMega1 App and via Tunein Radio as WVKO-FM. The club’s official website, ColumbusCrewSC.com, is set to stream the English-language radio broadcast online.

 

Crew SC and Toronto met three times last season while competing for the Trillium Cup, playing to a 0-0 draw at BMO Field on May 21, a 1-1 draw at MAPFRE Stadium on July 13 and a 3-0 win for Toronto FC at BMO Field in their final meeting of 2016 on July 31. Saturday’s match marks the 29th all-time regular-season meeting between the two clubs. The Black & Gold currently hold an all-time record of 12-6-10 against Toronto and have won the Trillium Cup on six of the nine occasions it has been contested.

 

Last Saturday, Crew SC took on the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois in its sixth match of the season. Hector Jimenez made his first regular-season start of the 2017 season, while rookie defender Alex Crognale made his second consecutive start in as many games. The Fire would score the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute on a strike from Nemanja Nikolic, assisted by Dax McCarty. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen made four stops, tying his MLS career-high for saves in a game.

 

Steffen’s four saves bring his total to 17 on the regular-season and his current Goals Against Average (GAA) to 1.16. Justin Meram made his 160th regular-season appearance for Crew SC, tying Robert Warzycha for seventh place on the club’s all-time regular-season appearances list. Meram also moved up on another club leaderboard, passing Edson Buddle into sixth place on the club’s all-time regular-season shots list with 270.
